All news coverage dealing with Harrison Ford's mishap with his PT-17 are shy of discussing what caused the accident. Anyone around here have any news on this?

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But in practice, there is.

I heard it lost power. Don't know why, but I bet some govt. agency is inspecting the plane for answers.

That was a PT22, they have bad low speed handling (by design, because they are trainers) you can tell by the engine and slight rearward sweep to the wings.

The media at it's best...

A fully-loaded Delta Mad Dog 80 attempts to land during a heavy snow storm. looses control, slides sideways down the icy runway, and nearly jumps the safety barrier into the Bay at LGA... several are hurt, non-life threatening. FDNY and PANY are on scene with multiple units and have the scene under control. Passengers are being evacu...

.... wait... this just in... OMG!!! Harrison Ford crashed his pre-WW2 vintage Ryan PT22 onto the fairway of the 8-hole at super elite, members-only golf course in the ultra-rich and private area of Santa Monica!! He suffered non-life threatening injuries, and scratched up his face!!! Star Wars will be on hold!!!

Sorry.. you caught me #%&*$# again... never sit in the same room I am in while Chris Collinsworth broadcasts an NFL game..

Can you explain that a bit more?

The fence at LGA though, thankfully they thought ahead and used steel instead of titanium or it would of been a different story.

Ryan PT-22 is correct, I have some dual time in that crate along with the PT-19, BT-13 and smaller "kites"
while working for "stick time" at Hawthorn Air port just south of LA Calif.

All of the larger birds worked well with enough airspeed. You practiced stalls and spins at 8K with a very good instructor.

The ATSB will have a prelim. report soon. My guess is a bad Mag.

The PT17 has an inline engine and the PT22 has a five cylinder radial. The rearward sweep to the wing is obvious if you look at both from the top view. If you looked at the crashed plane, you can see that the wings sweep back a little 3 or 4 degrees as they should, that is not caused by the ground impact.

If I can get this uploaded it will show the difference. These are card models I have built of both planes

The first is a PT16, the second is the PT22 the which was the plane in the crash.

I heard Bryan Williams was stowing away in the second seat and he reported they took fire. Then I heard that Bill O'Reilly was on the ground and pulled them both to safety, also under fire...

These models are from Fiddlers Green, they are pretty simple, and I added some extra details.

Thank You

The PT-17 is the Stearman, Radial engine. The PT-19 the you show as a model has the in line engine.

There were several of these around the air port that I worked on a few times, but did not fly in them as a student.

A few years ago, I took a FUN ride in a PT-17 Stearman ( very expensive ). The PT-13 was a very early edition of the
Stearmsn which was used in training of the Tuskegie Airman ( not sure of the spelling).

Some of you need to go back to your "airplane ID Cards" for a quick review.

I loved reading and hearing the media reports concerning the type of plane. My favorite was "vintage WWII fighter". Suprised to find none reported it as the "Millennium Falcon".
