We never had them at MacDill. We did have a rabbit problem at Lakenheath, though. I was on a police patrol one night and had to catch one that had gotten into the VOQ. Wrapped it up in a giant towel and released it outside.

Considering it was severely deformed, likely from poison, I probably should've shot it.

they also get leprosy, which might account for deformation. if you do catch one be very careful not to hold it close with the legs toward you, they are powerful diggers and can disembowel you.

I went down to the laundry and grabbed two giant towels. Had gloves on too.

Have even a few around here. Been years since seeing Jack Rabbit around here. the ones I saw I thought
at first they were little dogs they were big. And when stood up almost 4ft high. They are all rear feet.

they tend to jump when startled, not good when they're under a car.

Yea it's a hoot to see a live one waddling down the road, slow down and follow em about 8 feet back. Their hearing sucks so they won't hear ya till you lay on the horn. They jump about 3-4 feet straight up and are running full speed
before they land !

in Texas most Armadillos are found around Amarillo

Yeah I ran over one at night in Texas while doing 60mph, made such a bad noise underneath my car that I had to pull over to check that it hadn't ripped out the muffler and exhaust, like running over a suicidal canon ball with feet!

I thought they were carriers, I didn't think they were affected by
the microbe - basically leprosy on the hoof, so don't touch them?
Rather like birds and salmonella.

Not that fast? Or not that smart? Deer are fast, but when they run out in front of you from only 15-20 feet away when you're doing 60, that's just plain stupid.

They're quick when they want to be and they can jump straight up in the air about 4' or more. We used to go shining for them at night.
My Grandad ran over one in his truck and it jumped up so hard it knocked his muffler lose. LOL

I rode a motorcycle through southern Missouri 25 years ago on Hwy 60. There was a section somewhere in there for about an hour where it was just an insane roadkill disaster. I must have had to dodge several hundred dead armadillos, along with a ton of dead skunks, squirrels, a handful of dead turtles, cats, dogs, there was even a big German Shepherd ripped clean in half. There were sections with so many dead animals I had to slow down to around 45mph in order to dodge the corpses. In 30 years of driving all over half of America I've never seen anything like it anywhere else.
