Microsoft that is.

I was happily typing some email in Outlook webmail and bang! What the hell is that in the middle of my text?! Advertisement, that's what, and a big one as well. nope

Even more extreme, notice the "remove preview" link at the bottom right. If you don't click on it, I think you actually will send the mail with that inserted there.

... and to think this is a corporate Office360 account... I wonder what other information they gather for... erm... ad placement purposes.

He's in a corporate environment, so he's probably required to use it. The last time someone in our building decided to install their own email program it screwed up all their mailboxes and Outlook permissions, as expected. Don't be that guy at work wink

That being said I'm not aware of ever having ads, and we use Office 365.

The joys of The Cloud.

What did you expect, transmitting everything you work on to some other company's data center?
Privacy?

Remember, all the executives of companies heavily invested in cloud based services declared more a decade ago that your privacy would be dead and that it was "inevitable" (at least in their vision of the future). And they mean it. Most people are pretty open about their plans of world domination. I just don't understand why nobody takes them seriously. If Eric Schmidt says that if you want to see your private activities be made public, "maybe you shouldn't do them in the first place", there's an implicit, totalitarian world view behind it. This is about a direct threat as it gets in business. Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft (to a lesser degree, but still) - their business models are heavily based on monitoring their customers' activities, and to monetize that accumulated knowledge.

Well, it strange, because I then went and tried to reproduce it and it didn't work... No ad whatsoever. Might be that particular computer... I'll try later.

I do use Thunderbird. They have people using TB and the one in Mac OS, don't know the name, so there's no problem there. Except that I can't make TB work for sending, just receiving.
