Jasta 5 was smashing today - first we shot down 2 R.E.8 bombers, which were about to bomb an airfield.
The we took on SPAD VII from the "Storck" Escadrille, who tried to stop us.
Neisen and Mai shot down 1 each, and Strobel and I both had 2 on our slate.
One of mine was French ace Mathieu Marie Joseph Antoine Tenant de la Tour.
Impressive names these French aces have!

Not that long, Marie Joseph Antoine are just his second/middle names.

Do all the French have so many second and middle names, actionjoe?

Well, from what I know, two is the norm, three is not uncommon amongst religious families (catholic at least).

Checking on the aerodrome, Mathieu has in fact quite a short name compared to a

Pierre Marie Gabriel Vincent Ernest Leroy de Boiseaumarie or a

Honore Marie Joseph Leon Guillaume de Bonald

High over the Front
Sunday April 8, 1917 leading a patrol of J11. Over the front a formation of N23's (of course!) attacks us while I was attempting to get to a group of Strutters.
I have flown this month quite a bit and the history books talk a lot about the "poor Allies flying in obsolete machines." Be nice to see some!
All stock graphics. No visible mods.

The fight is joined

Time for a quick decision! I have the upper hand on the N23 in the lower left. Already damaged by my fire it is just a matter of time. His pal is behind me shooting (if you look close you can see his tracer) while my wingman is behind him. The angle of fire is lousy! He can't hit me right?
I figure that the enemy will be distracted by my guy shooting, break off, and I can finish off my opponent then help my wingman.

Yikes! A violation of "Dicta Olham" (#6) costs me dearly as no one assumed the roles I assigned to them! My wingman did nothing apparently and the Britisher (must have been a HA) shot me up real quick even from this terrible angle. By the time I realized my danger I was much too damaged to maneuver and, well, you see the result.

And I might fly better if I stop fumbling for the pause button to take these damn screenshots! Hehe...

I have the Pause button programmed under my left ring finger on my Warthog throttle...(last picture) looks like that's gonna leave a mark.

That is one shot to heck Albatross!
What is the black thing between the prop and what is left of the lower wing?

I wondered that when I first saw the shot but unfortunately I have seen it before!
It's the axel for the undercarriage wheels I believe.

With FRAPS on, I just keep my left index finger on the 'S' key and tap it often. Nets a lot of junk, to be sure, but when the action starts to happen, I ususlly get the best of it.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But in practice, there is.

A nice shot, Hauksbee - the craft appears so true, as if it had a shimmer of engine oil on the nose.
And a rare sight also - didn't see any Hannovers since a long while.

Tired of being mocked by his comrades as the "Jasta's British Ace" for all the Alb destruction he causes Leutnant "DIH" goes on leave and rejoins J11 on March 1, 1918
All stock graphics.

Forming up and showing off the new WOFF 2.XX Dr.1 model.

Near the front I observe puffs of AA fire that gets bigger soon interspersed with the dots of approaching planes. SE5a's of 56 Squadron!
Of interest is the pilots head position. I noticed this once before. When using TrackIR the pilots head actually follows your line of sight.

Being a little more prudent in the use of the "Pause" button I soon best my foe and snap this shot as he is clearly plunging to his doom. The Dr.1 handles like a dream and I didn't stall once. I should get a medal just for that.

Back at base my flight claims 3 SE's but lose two DR.1's with one pilot surviving.
I receive my Silver Cup as my victory is confirmed.

As much as I love the handling and flight characteristics of the Dr.1 I find myself a little depressed flying in that time period. The 60% fuel load (using Bletchley's MM) and the grey skies as we flew to the front - I couldn't get one of the themes from the movie "The Blue Max" out of my head. The one were they are flying to the front, with the German Army in apparent full retreat, to strafe that infantry column.

So I went back to J11 on April 8, 1917 (the day before the big British offensive) where the war is a little more "peaceful and glorious."

Near the front our Kette of 5 is approached by 7 or 8 N23's (of course!) from some French unit. Kette Einz does not join the party apparently.
I have watched plenty of examples of AI flight leadership and they can definitely be sketchy - not engaging obvious targets and not reacting to the approaching enemy until they are very close.
"Dicta Olham #8" is working just fine though, and my opponent is damaged, so I should be able to finish him off.

Unfortunately this group of N23's promptly slaughters the entire Kette allowing them to all focus on me. Got that from the Mission Debrief.
I must have missed the part of the Dicta that covered being outnumbered 4 to 1 at low level by faster, better climbing, and more maneuverable planes. Olham, can I get an update please?
So the entire flight dies except for HA LvR who crashed but with minor wounds. Back to the pilot pool. "Bloody April" indeed!

I think the missing Dicta you are looking for is something like "Let's get the hell out of here!"

Hehe. I would whole heartedly agree sir!
Unfortunately, for some totally stupid "DIH" reason I hate leaving my AI squadron mates in the lurch. Must be some Marine Corps hang-over.
And that always costs me.

These are N 17 of Escadrille 313 (we have no skins for N23, but externally these plane are almost the same).
However, there are a bit far from their base (N313 duty was Dunkirk defense), and a bit early as the Escadrille was created...12 July 1917.
