It's a chick flick. Iron Eagle is what the men kids went to see FIFY

I keep on thinking that if movies were RPGs character Iron Eagle is what Top Gun is, just with one points less in each characteristic.
Actors, Music, females, jets... Gosh, even the plot.

Regarding this discussion about the Top Gun movie I want to say two things. First of all, "damn you": - You forced me to dig up my Top Gun soundtrack CD (it was almost like an archeological digging) and listen to it Secondly, someone mentioned earlier something about a Top Gun sequel. About this, I remember to have read some rumours that a Top Gun 2 movie was being considered with Tom Cruise repeating the main character role as Maverick and instead of featuring F-14s (which is logic since they are now retired from service in the US) it will feature the F-35 (likely the F-35C variant). Now I imagine the following if they model the F-35s with a reasonable level of realism: - Iceman: Maverick you have bogey approaching your six! - Maverick: I know, DAS warned me. - Iceman: The Bogey shot a missile at you! - Maverick: I know, DAS warned me. Deploying countermeasures... - Iceman: Hold on Maverick, I'm going after your bogey! - Maverick: There's no need. (Maverick launches an AIM-9X BlockII in LOAL mode at the enemy at his 6 o'clock, the missile executes a 180 turn and BANG! Bogey destroyed!)

Sorry, couldn't vote! Not enough options...
It was silly AND dumb, and I enjoyed it in 1986 when I first saw it. And confirmed dumb and silly on every viewing after. And awesome flight sequences. And many "WTF why are they naked again?!? Did I walk into the wrong movie?!" moments.
This is not a movie about war. Heck it doesn't even feature a war. One single air battle over ocean in the 1980's was a skirmish, not a war. Happened several times. Such skirmishes never featured an enemy in the normal war context. One minute its all peaceful, the next minute you are angling for position. Your opponent shall remain faceless and nameless.
This is a movie about cool jets, cool guys doing cool guy things. Its about how you face danger and why recklessness costs lives. Its about self control, or lack thereof.
And I really do wonder about the homoeroticism... almost Pride Parade -like! there may well have been truth to the notion Quentin Tarantino was saying. Apparently its normal for many movies to have hidden plots, under the surface of the movie, that are either there for you to discover, or to mould your subconcious mind. Sorry hollywood, your oiled up musclemen have not caused me to question my preferences!
The second time I saw TG, was just outside a USN Airstation... well you can imagine how excited the audience got by the end of the movie!

I didn't vote, because my view isn't on there. It'd be somewhere between I love it and I liked it as a kid but I think it's silly now. Basically, I liked it when it first came out, but think it's a little dated now, and I can see more of the flaws. Some of the things are silly, but I still don't find the movie silly overall.
Things were different in 1986, so in that context, a lot of what makes us cringe now was more the norm in movies. It still have some great flying footage, and I find that to always be fun to watch. Pretty much summed up my thoughts. Enjoyed it as a kid, watched it over and over. As an adult I'll still watch it and I see the flaws but wouldn't consider it silly.

Could you imagine the deplorable pile of steam Top Gun would be if it was a 2014 film?
Crap for nothing CGI, Maverick would do the maneuvers from hot shots, Goose would be a Ron Weasley, while Charlie would be Emma Watson, Iceman would be Draco.
TBH, I dont see how and WHO funded 4 Iron Eagle Sequels (5th one is in pre-production)

Playing, playing with the boys!
What was Kenny Loggins thinking? That Quentin Tarantino was right: the real plot really was about a young guy struggling to decide between going gay Vs straight? "Playin with the boys"??!?! Its not exactly encrypted! I mean think about it... how do you sell a gay romance movie in the mid-80's... and not get slaughtered in the box office? Or exiting the movie? You distract all us straights with firebreathing dragons called Tomcats, and an implausible blonde consultant, and just generally cool lookin stuff.

Even though Top Gun is one of my favourite movies, I'm not a big Tom Cruise fan. I don't dislike him but for me the real star of Top Gun is the Tomcat. However, Tom's stock just went up IMO. Im saying right now no CGI on the jets. If we can figure all that out, and the Department of Defense will allow us to do it, that would be fun. Tom Cruise: I'll do Top Gun 2 if there's 'no CGI on the jets' Wizard
