AMD Ryzen 7 5800 can easily be unlocked to 5800X

AMD Ryzen 7 5800 non-X + PBO = 5800X

According to WolStame, who is Lenovo China Gaming Desktop Product Planning Manager, the Ryzen 7 5800 might be the most interesting CPU released thus far in 2021. This CPU is essentially a power-limited version of the 5800X, a power that can easily be unlocked through some PBO (Precision Boost Overdrive) optimizations.

AMD Says Its Focusing on Zen 4 & Zen 5 CPUs To Be Extremely Competitive, RDNA 3 GPUs To Offer Higher Performance Per Watt

AMD's CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, told that their CPU teams are fully focused on their next-generation Zen 4 and Zen 5 core architectures while the GPU team is currently hard at work on developing the RDNA 3 architecture.

AMD's next-generation Zen 4 and Zen 5 core architectures are already being prepped & will be extremely competitive.

We know little about Zen 4, let alone Zen 5, right now but the architecture promises to be a huge deal for the consumer and server segment. The Zen 4 architecture is positioned to launch in 2021 and Ryzen CPUs based on the architecture would be the first to get support on a brand new AM5 platform which will offer next-generation DDR5 & USB 4.0 support.

AMD is also looking into increasing the core counts of each respective CPU lineup.

The AMD Zen 4 architecture will directly compete against Intel's Alder Lake lineup while RDNA 3 will tackle NVIDIA's refreshed Ampere GPUs which are likely to be introduced by end of 2021 or in early 2022.

Report: Intel Will Build DG2 [GPU] at TSMC on ‘Enhanced’ 7nm Node

According to Reuters, Intel intends to manufacture DG2 — its upcoming consumer graphics card — at TSMC, on an enhanced 7nm node that hasn’t even been named yet.

Intel CEO Bob Swan gave interviews ahead of CES 2021, in which he appears to be charting a middle ground between Intel yanking all of its current third-party semiconductor manufacturing back into its own fabs and going purely fabless. According to Swan, Intel’s goal is to maintain maximum flexibility in its approaches.

Any attempt by Intel to shift its business to TSMC wholesale would also require a dramatic capacity expansion on TSMC’s part.

The problem is: Now that Intel in-house manufacturing is having major issues, they will buy TSMC GPUs (and maybe CPUs). That may mean less TSMC availability for AMD and, perhaps, higher costs at the consumer level.

The turmoil at Intel has not been greatly overstated:

Intel Appoints Pat Gelsinger as New CEO, From Feb 15th

News is breaking that Intel has announced that Pat Gelsinger, CEO of VMWare, is to take the role of CEO at Intel from February 15th.

Intel today has released a press statement saying that current CEO Bob Swan (who we interviewed only a few days ago!) is to step down in his role, and be succeeded by Pat Gelsinger. Gelsinger, a veteran of the industry, has spent over 40 years at companies such as VMWare, EMC, and spent 30 years previously at Intel, reaching the position of Chief Technology Officer.

Gelsinger is set to oversee the next generation of Intel products and manufacturing. This includes 10nm, 7nm, Alder Lake, future Lakes, Sapphire Rapids, discrete graphics, Ponte Vecchio, networking, packaging, IoT, infrastructure, artificial intelligence, and 5G compute.

Ultimately, I expect parity among Intel and AMD and Nvidia. But, this appointment of Gelsinger may or may not do the trick for Intel. We'll see.

AMD and NVIDIA expect GPU inventory to remain lean throughout Q1

Not only is the market is facing shortages in the substrate, components, and the GPUs themselves, but gamers also need to face price hikes on PC components in the United States due to increased tariffs, and across the world due to the rising popularity of GPU mining.

Interesting conundrum for me. I won't be able to get a 7nm RX6800XT at MSRP before April (??). But, a year later, the 5nm designs with improved structure will hit the market. Do I want to buy two expensive cards in consecutive years? At a minimum, it will stop me from considering the $1500 price range. Unless, I spot one soon and can't resist smile

Pat Gelsinger is the best possible choice for CEO of Intel

Pat Gelsinger is the single best choice to lead Intel, he has the rare combination of technical aptitude, managerial ability, and personality that will allow him to do the job. Pat knows Intel intimately having spent decades there starting from the bottom and moving to almost x the job he now will assume.

Intel has some monumental, crippling, potentially company-ending problems in their near term future and Pat is the one single candidate well equipped to tackle all of them. Lets hope it is possible, and if it is, he can do it.

I feel it. If I had done what you did, like you, I would simply be enjoying it right now. yep

And, yes, with my current GPU, MSFS2020 is the one application where my system falls very-very-short at 4K sigh

AMD reunites Raja Koduri with his baby: an RX 6800 graphics card

It's nice when everybody gets along.

Intel's chief architect, Raja Koduri, the man in charge of gearing up Intel's discrete graphics charge with Xe, just received a 'surprise' AMD RX 6800 graphics card in the post from his ex-employer.

Koduri left his top position at the Radeon Technology Group back in 2017, following a short sabbatical from the role in the days following Vega's launch. It was always said that the Navi architecture (before we knew it as RDNA) was Koduri's pet project, so perhaps it's only fitting that the now-Intel GPU engineer would receive an RDNA 2 card in the mail.

Intel May Postpone Manufacturing Decision, Emphasizes Beating Apple

Intel’s new CEO, Pat Gelsinger, has wasted no time. While he won’t take over from Bob Swan until February, he’s already addressed Intel’s workforce in an all-hands meeting.

Intel told assembled employees that it might wait to announce any change to its manufacturing plans until Gelsinger is onboard. This is an interesting wrinkle to the overarching manufacturing situation, and it implies that Intel wants a CEO with an engineering background to examine the situation and possibly make the decision.

When i read Gelsinger was to become CEO, I wondered why they would "stick him" with the prior CEOs decision to use TSMC in place of Intel manufacturing (for some things).

Now, maybe they will "unstick" him. During my career, I noticed "non-technical" managers were not as good at making technical decisions as managers with a "technical" background (duh).

AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX is now PassMark’s highest ranking mobile CPU

The Ryzen 9 5900HX is not even the fastest CPU of the Cezanne FP6 series, yet it was enough to top the PassMark mobile CPU ranking in both single and multi-threaded benchmarks.

The Ryzen 9 5900HX is an unlocked 8-core and 16-thread CPU clocked at 3.3 GHz up to 4.7 GHz. The CPU is targetted for high-end gaming laptops, such as ASUS ROG Zephyrus or Strix series (the source of today’s leak).

TSMC Will Spend an Extra $10B on Chip Production in 2021

That’s a 1.54x increase if you take $26.5B as a midpoint estimate, and it comes on the heels of the largest demand surge the semiconductor industry has absorbed in decades, if ever.

TSMC’s anticipated revenue growth for 2021 over 2020 is in the mid-teens — very healthy — but the company’s budget increase will likely eat more than half its total revenue.

Some of TSMC’s new capital outlay will be used to break ground on a new fab the company is building in Arizona, but that plant isn’t expected to be online until 2024.

In this past quarter, 5nm shipments accounted for 20 percent of TSMC’s revenue, while 7nm held 29 percent and 16nm grabbed 13 percent.

Intel's new CEO (Technically oriented vs. Business oriented like the previous CEO) says the following:

Quote
Intel Says it Fixed 7nm Process, But Will Still Outsource Some Parts

Incoming CEO says 7nm recovery is in good shape

Incoming Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger spoke on the call, saying that he has personally reviewed progress on the company's 7nm process over the last week and that he is pleased with the "health and recovery of the 7nm program.

he is confident that the majority of Intel's 2023 CPU products will come from the company's own factories.

Intel, Nvidia Deny Blocking AMD From High-End Mobile Gaming

There’s a rumor going around that Intel and Nvidia have conspired to block AMD’s Ryzen Mobile 4000 series from high-end gaming laptops. This information has supposedly been provided by an unnamed OEM

let’s address the elephant in the room. The reason conspiracy theories about blocking AMD from accessing the market find a home online is that there has been a lot of bad blood between the two companies over the decades. Intel went all the way to the Supreme Court in an attempt to revoke AMD’s right to manufacture x86 CPUs. Over a decade later, AMD filed an antitrust lawsuit against Intel, alleging that the company had abused its monopoly in the x86 market by creating a rebate system that effectively locked AMD out of certain market segments.

the court of public opinion had a lot to say about Intel’s behavior, and not much of it was good.

[Back then] Intel paid AMD $1.25B and renegotiated its x86 license to settle the case, and paid a $1.45B fine to the EU.

I’ve conducted my own investigations into the related compiler optimization differences that also formed part of the lawsuit

The Ryzen 5000 desktop launch in the fall of 2020 gave AMD a real claim to all-around fastest CPU, including gaming. .. AMD currently holds a leadership position in desktop.

As I've mentioned before, those "goings on" were why I became an AMD supporter. Note the "compiler optimization differences" were a reason some things ran better on Intel than AMD -- i.e. the compilers that produced the code were rigged in Intel's favor.

Is Intel "at it again"? The author of the article is not sure and neither am I. Right now this is just an unproven rumor. But, we'll see.

Long term, with fair competition, I assume Intel and AMD will be competitive (i.e. each will win some and lose some). Fair competition is good for customers smile

AMD Navi 31 rumored to be dual 80CU chiplet design, up to 10240 cores?

AMD Navi 31, the first desktop chiplet-based GPU?

We have heard rumors about the upcoming Navi 31 GPU for a while now. In fact, there have been rumors about Navi 41 already. The Navi 31 might be AMD’s first MCM (multi-chip module) design. .. AMD made it clear that RDNA3 has Radeon DNA and it is for sure aiming at the gaming market.

AMD is expected to talk about the architecture by 2022. It would appear that AMD might lift a curtain on RDNA3 somewhere later this year.

When Navi started out, and was announced, they said it would be a multi-chip GPU. That method would allow unlimited "shaders" and a better Price/performance.

So far, Navi has been a single GPU chip. Maybe next year, we'll see the first "multi-chip" version -- and another huge uptick in performance.

AMD Ryzen 5000 Mobile Zen3 architecture detailed

Today AMD lifts the embargo on AMD Ryzen 5000 mobile series architecture details

AMD claims that their new Zen3 mobile processors will provide a ‘historic single thread performance uplift’. In fact, AMD claims that Ryze9 5900HX, the unlocked 8-core high-end CPU, will be up to 19% faster than the current Intel flagship Core i9-10980HK.

There are new power regulating features that improve battery life up to 2 hours, AMD claims.

Ryzen 5000H and 5000U based laptops will start shipping in February,

Iris Xe Intel’s first desktop discrete GPU will not work with AMD processors

The Iris Xe graphics cards are not targeted at gamers though. These cards are meant to be offered for low-power and low-cost multimedia machines, home entertainment systems, or business consumers.

the Iris Xe graphics card will not work on AMD systems.

[Intel Spokesman] The Iris Xe discrete add-in card will be paired with 9th gen (Coffee Lake-S) and 10th gen (Comet Lake-S) Intel® Core™ desktop processors and Intel(R) B460, H410, B365, and H310C chipset-based motherboards and sold as part of pre-built systems. These motherboards require a special BIOS that supports Intel Iris Xe, so the cards won’t be compatible with other systems.

Hitman 3 PC performance proves there might just be some fine wine in AMD's RX 6800 XT

The first big game of 2021 gives us a chance to check out the classic AMD vs. Nvidia head-to-head, and highlights what VRS can deliver in a real game.

VRS is a relatively modern GPU feature—though it was first introduced in 2019—which essentially allows a game to select different levels of fidelity actually within the shading of a scene. There are two tiers listed for VRS, Tier 1 and Tier 2.

There has long been a bit of a stigma to AMD's GPU drivers, but they've played a blinder here, so is this a taste of what is to come with new games coming out this year?
