ASRock Releases BETA BIOS Support For AMD Ryzen 5000 CPUs on X370, B350 & A320 Motherboards

These motherboards date all the way back to 2017 when the first AMD Ryzen CPUs were launched so they are quite old but there are plenty of users who still own these boards and are running either 1st or 2nd Gen Ryzen CPUs on them. The site reports that there are no issues in terms of AMD Ryzen 5000 CPU support but full stability for the chips is not guaranteed.

300 series motherboard support by other motherboard manufacturers may increase.

What this shows is that the industry recognizes AMD as having very competitive/attractive Ryzen 5000 CPUs.

This sort of thing only affects a fraction of CPU users; but, it amounts to good publicity that will help AMD future sales.

The point of noting the following: High resolutions in an up to date game takes lots of GPU memory. So, the 16GB of the new AMD "Big Navi" cards is relevant. For Nvidia purchasers, its probably good to wait for the RTX3080Ti with the extra memory.

Quote
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 offers 31 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 at 8K with raytracing, 6.6 FPS without DLSS

NVIDIA heavily promoted its new flagship graphics card based on Ampere architecture as the first 8K gaming GPU.

TweakTown’s testing platform features Intel’s Core i9-10900K processor and Z490 motherboard. The game settings have been all set to maximum, even the ray tracing which was set to ‘Psycho’. In other words, they took the most demanding game and applied the most demanding settings

The quick review by TweakTown also shows that the 24GB VRAM on the graphics card is hardly enough for the Cyberpunk 2077 running at 8K without DLSS. Only by disabling ray tracing, memory allocation drops to 21 GB.

So, if spending a lot on a new GPU to be used in new high-end games at 4K or 8K, check the size of the GPU memory. As already noted, if 60fps is enough for a gamer, one can buy a good 4K television for well under $300 (my 43" 4K monitor/TV currently sells for $230 -- and has good color and contrast -- just info, not selling them smile ).

As already noted, Nvidia DLSS 8K is not true 8K -- just a good approximation -- it only works on games programmed for it. Most AMD GPUs have RIS (works on most games but less well than DLSS). Also, AMD is working on a comparable feature to DLSS. It should come out as a driver update (but not released yet).

The point of the following is that AMD "Big Navi" custom cards are still being developed and are not expected real soon.

MSI shows off Radeon RX 6800 XT GAMING X TRIO, confirms RX 6900 XT GAMING X TRIO

During the MSI Insider show, the company announced its flagship Radeon graphics card from the RX 6000 series, the RX 6900 XT GAMING X TRIO.

The graphics card is still in the development process, for instance, the PCB has not been finalized yet.

If there is any delay or shortage of any component, the graphics card will likely launch in March, because in mid-February is the Chinese New Year and that means no graphics card will be produced at that time, the MSI employees explain.

No [Big Navi] supply from AMD and board partners

Despite almost a month passing since the launch of Radeon RX 6800 cards, the supply of graphics cards is still non-existent. AMD clearly failed to communicate the situation to the community

AMD recently confirmed it will continue to make reference cards, which is good news since this might be a chance to actually [buy] these cards at an advertised price. Custom designs are easily 100-150 USD more expensive, greatly affecting the price to performance ratio.

Epic Games Launcher makes AMD Ryzen [and Intel] CPUs run [10C to 20C] hotter even without any game running

At this moment there is no fix for this issue, however, there are workarounds. A good idea is to link Epic Games Launcher to GOG Galaxy, which has a built-in feature to automatically close ‘original’ launchers after the game is shut down. This way the launcher will no longer be working in the background once users leave the game.

It is also reported that EGL sends 14x as much data as Steam and NVIDIA Experience while working in the background.

Epic games distributes Cyberpunk 2077.

AMD Ryzen 9 5900H 8 Core Cezanne-H ‘Zen 3’ Mobility CPU Benchmarks Leak Out, Almost As Fast As Intel’s 10 Core Desktop CPUs

The base clock for the chip is rated at 3.30 GHz & the boost clock is rated at 4.60 GHz. A detailed log of the benchmark run shows that all cores were hitting 4.65 GHz during the test. Other features of the chip include an enhanced Vega GPU

Even compared to something like the Intel Core i9-10900 which is a 65W & 10 core desktop CPU with a maximum power limit of around 220W, the 35 (45W cTDP) AMD Ryzen 9 5900H CPU offers the same level of multi-core performance and blazes past the Core i9-10900 within single-core tests thanks to the massive IPC uplift the Zen 3 has to offer.

Newer laptops are capable of serious computation. My mid/low cost AMD 4000 series laptop scored high. AMD 5000 series scores much higher.

So, looks good for AMD future if the "laptops of choice" begin to be AMD units.

Epic Games Launcher will receive a fix for high CPU usage bug

Epic Game Launcher was utilizing above average CPU resources. It didn’t matter if the application was in the foreground or hidden in the task manager, the launcher was still utilizing a few percent of the CPU power.

Earlier today, Sergiy Galyonkin, a developer behind Epic Game Launcher, has confirmed that his team has already identified the issue and have implemented a fix that is currently being tested. It is unknown when the patch will go live for all users.

Intel (INTC) Shares Soar as the Activist Hedge Fund Third Point Urges the Semiconductor Behemoth To Reverse Its Brain Drain and Implement an Operational Shakeup

Third Point’s CEO, Daniel Loeb, has penned a letter to the chairman of Intel, Omar Ishrak. The letter painted a bleak picture, pointing at the debilitating brain drain issue that Intel has been contending with in recent times, precipitated by fleeing chip designers who were “demoralized by the status quo”. Loeb called upon Intel to take immediate remedial measures in order to rectify this “human capital management issue”.

Evidentially, Intel really does have an internal problem.

We'll see if anything positive happens because of this "letter".

Future competition -- Competition is good:

EU Signs A Declaration for 2 nm Node Developmen

The European Union has signed a declaration that focuses on developing both the 2 nm node and a custom processor. This declaration will allocate up to 145 billion Euros, which will develop a new EU custom processor and the development of a 2 nm node. This declaration was signed by seventeen members, including Belgium, France, Germany, Croatia, Estonia, Italy, Greece, Malta, Spain, The Netherlands, Portugal, Austria, Slovenia, Slovakia, Romania, Finland, and Cyprus.

This declaration also focuses on developing the EU's own custom embedded processors, which will be designed for industrial applications and feature a low power consumption. This will keep the EU from relying on third-party processors for manufacturing purposes.

Based on my experience, it may be as long as 10 years before a 2nm product hits the market -- not a bad thing -- just how long it may take. Hope it works out. thumbsup

We've heard this one before. Cryptocurrency miners are buying up the new GPUs -- i.e. fewer for us gamers to buy.

This GeForce RTX 3080 Ethereum mining rig now makes $20K per month

GPU mining rig .. using 78 GeForce RTX 3080 graphics cards

The RTX 3080-based mining rig that was shared on social media is codenamed Berta 2 and it is already operational. The price of 1 Bitcoin (BTC) has recently skyrocketed to 34K USD

Assuming that the price of RTX 3080 is somewhere in the 699 to 1199 USD space, the cost of the whole rig is estimated 100K USD.

An exceedingly long instructive-article that describes Intel "binning" process. That is, how they test all the chips and use the best for the best Intel processors. It describes how only a couple chip designs provide many "different" CPUs with different core counts.

Everyone does that, including AMD. However, because Intel has fallen behind AMD, the process is more extreme to get a very few chips out of every batch that beats AMDs best.

Those hand picked very high end chips have downsides -- mainly very high power use, high temperatures, and lack of availability to purchase at MSRP.

The article just describes all the Intel thought that goes into binning chips to provide a "product line". The article provides many test results -- it is instructive -- it is not anti-Intel or pro-AMD.

Intel Core i9-10850K Review: The Real Intel Flagship

[Article final section] Conclusion: Bin to Win

Ultimately, this is what I think happened to Intel with the Core i9-10900K. The silicon quality level required to manufacturer the hardware was strict to provide a higher performance product, but too strict to be able to manufacturer a sufficient quantity to meet demand

Thus entered the Core i9-10850K. A slightly less aggressive product, offered at a cheaper price, and because of the less aggressive bin, available in sufficient quantities to keep system builders and end-users happy if the 10900K was not in stock locally. [the article notes that 10850 is almost identical performance to 10900 -- so, a good choice to buy if one wants an Intel CPU]

[Article final paragraph] On performance against AMD, the 5800X wins on single threaded loads by 15-20% and encoding, while the 10850K wins on rendering multithreaded workloads like Blender by up to 10%. For 1080p maximum gaming with our RTX 2080 Ti, the differences in the most modern titles are minor at best, even with 5% lows. Certain titles will lean up to 5-8% in one direction (FF14 to AMD, F1 2019 to Intel, Civ6 to AMD). If I had to choose between the Intel and AMD, I’d have to recommend the AMD, but I'm the sort of person who temperature watches when I'm doing a heavy workload.

AMD Radeon RX 6700 series rumored to launch by the end of March

Cowcotland reports that Radeon RX 6700 series will feature Navi 22 GPU with up to 40 Compute Units (2560 SPs). Therefore, the RX 6700 XT is believed to offer half of the flagship’s RX 6900 XT Stream Processors. It is also reported that the card will feature 12GB of memory attached to a 192-bit memory bus. The exact specifications of the graphics cards have not yet been confirmed though.

The RX 6700 non-XT is also expected to feature 12GB GDDR6 memory, which might be the reason why NVIDIA is now pushing RTX 3060 with 12GB memory as well, despite releasing an 8GB 3060 Ti model just a month earlier.

Basically, the RX 6700XT replaces the RX 5700XT that I use. Same shader count but faster shaders and 12GB memory (vs 8GB) for titles like MSFS2020.

192bit memory is fast enough for AMD because the AMD 6000 series GPU chips are designed differently to get much more out of 192bits.

Nvidia’s Purchase of ARM Is Being Investigated by UK Watchdog

the UK government has announced an investigation into the deal and the likely outcomes if Nvidia is allowed to buy ARM.

Nvidia has previously promised that it would retain ARM’s licensing model and its pledge of neutrality regarding how it treats its customers. How serious it is about this promise has been a topic of some debate. Nvidia, historically, has put more effort into creating its own walled garden of technology. PhysX, CUDA, G-Sync, and other technologies introduced over the years, were created by Nvidia, for Nvidia. This has, at times, been controversial, but it’s also been consistent.

This particular deal was always going to face close scrutiny, so it’s not surprising to see the UK giving it a careful once-over. We’ll find out over the course of this year what regulators in various nations think of the underlying terms of the deal.

AMD Demolishes All Records at Germany's Largest Retailer, Ryzen 5000 & Ryzen 3000 CPU Sales Go Past 35,000 For A Combined Revenue of Almost 12 Million Euros

Well if you were thinking that AMD's Ryzen CPU sales couldn't get any better then you were wrong. Finishing 2020, MindFactory reported that it had sold over 35,000 AMD Ryzen Desktop CPUs, the bulk of which include the Ryzen 5000 'Zen 3' and Ryzen 3000 'Zen 2' parts.

This is 83% of the total share for the number of [AMD] CPUs sold in December while Intel which barely sold over 5000 of its 10th Gen and 9th Gen Core CPUs managed to grab a 17% share.

AMD keeps on scoring win after win and one could only imagine how much worse of a situation it would've been for Intel if there was no [AMD] supply shortage affecting the top-end parts.

AMD Ryzen 7 5700G Cezanne Desktop APU Specifications Leak Out in Geekbench Benchmark, Up To 4.66 GHz Clocks, 8 Zen 3 Cores

Just a "heads up" that AMD will be releasing a fast Ryzen 5000 series APU with built in graphics.

Good for HTPCs and office PCs. They are almost as fast as the mainstream AMD 5000 series CPUs.

ASUS ROG Strix Radeon RX 6900 XT

Water cooled and "only" $1499.99 plus shipping at Newegg. I actually found one "live" -- not sold out.

Too rich for my blood smile and "Sold Out" literally moments later biggrin

Still, that was the first time I've clicked and found any RX 6000 series for actual sale.

My son's 3080 gets delivered tomorrow........ordered on release day (14th September). He was originally 742 in the queue after the order was placed 2 minutes after the card was 'released'. Absolutely shocking.

AMD teases mid-range and mainstream Radeon RX 6000 graphics card series

During the CES 2021 news conference AMD Lisa Su confirmed that AMD is planning to launch mid-range series of RDNA2-baed graphics cards in the first half of 2021.

[per AMD] Radeon RX @Radeon AMD is on track to launch the first notebooks with #RDNA2 in the first half of 2021, and you'll see mainstream RDNA 2 desktop graphics card designs in the first half of the year as well.

Apparently still a few (??) months off.
