Guinness "Blonde" American Lager! Not sure if this is affecting the very fabric of space-time, but I am drinking an American lager from Ireland. It is delicious! smile

In all fairness, it's really just the massed produced supermarket brand beer that sucks in the US. There are a ton of really great microbreweries in the US that turn out high quality stuff.

Hey, hey, hey....leave American beers alone!

They're not "worse" than European beers, just different. It's like saying bacon is worse than ham - nope.

Personally I like the supermarket brand beers like Budweiser and Miller High Life. Indeed, I like them a whole lot better than pilsners or ales.

Sam Adams is pretty much the only supermarket beer I like.

What's funny is that Budweiser isn't even US owned anymore. It got bought out by some huge multinational out of South Africa I believe?

Bud is owned by InBev out of S.A.

It's brewed with rice as it's faster than traditional ingredients.

That explains it then it was the rice that made me lose a whole weekend.
In my younger days I went for a few beers with friend on a Friday evening
There was this realy buxom young lady giving vouchers for free bud and a promotion meant it was only a pound a pint
And i had a lot of pounds at the time.LoL
I arrived home early sunday morning by taxi from Dublin some hundred miles from where I lived with no money
And a very pissed looking wife met me at the door who not only was refusing to pay a very expensive cab fare but was refusing to let me in my house
Good times. I blame American beer for my behaviour. LoL

Actually, the rice is there because of American hops, which is sharper than European ones.

That's why microbrews and such buy their hops from Europe.

Years ago a bunch of us Canucks would travel to the USA a few times each summer. Our American friends insisted we bring Canuck beer for the partying after the races. They ended up 'on the floor' after drinking our beer and we ended up with all the young ladies after drinking their beer as we were relatively still sober. smile

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Why are some sources saying that InBev is from Belgium as opposed to South Africa?

Putting "InBev" in Google gives you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/InBev

Not nessecelery.. smile

There are many American varieties that American micro-brews use liberally. Especially the West Coast breweries like Sierra Nevada, Deschutes, and Stone.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_hop_varieties

And as an assistant home brewer to my son, rice has never come into play with what we have done in the past. We keep it simple with 2 row malt or whatever the traditional style calls for. As for the hops, much of that decision is based on style as well. For instance a west coast style IPA or an American strong ale would not be using European style hops..

The American adjunct lager that you favor evolved from the liberal use of rice and corn dating back to colonial times as the cultivation of malt grain wasn't always economical compared to the abundance of corn or rice. And I do know of a Thomas Jefferson recipe (Monticello Reserve) that uses rice.

It's a Game. smile

Most American Pale Lagers (Bud, etc.) are adjunct beers. They are extremely fine tuned, consistent products, but the tuning goes more into how to make it cheaper, while retaining the consistency.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adjuncts

Adjuncts are unmalted grains (such as corn, rice, rye, oats, barley, and wheat[1]) used in brewing beer which supplement the main mash ingredient (such as malted barley), often with the intention of cutting costs, but sometimes to create an additional feature, such as better foam retention, flavours or nutritional value or additives.

...and all of it because Prohibition pretty much killed the beer industry off - and when it was repealed they got up and running as quickly as they could.

There was actually, apparently, a far larger
cider industry before prohibition than the beer
industry, and prohibition really killed off
cider production - orchards full of surplus
apples had been torn out to find alternate
crops, and as it takes five years to get apples,
and four months to get barley, cider didn't
have a change after the repeal. US culture was
totally shifted, and few people now are even
aware of it. And the legend of Johnny Appleseed
wasn't about a piece of fresh fruit for lunch;
cider and applejack were homemade everywhere
in the 19th century.
