the only "MMO" I play is Mechwarrior Online. You can certainly be competitive without spending anything, and spending 15-30 bucks will put you in a very good spot in the game as far as allowing more owned battlemechs at a time.

Depends on the game. Some, you just have to play much longer to advance, but if it's a good game, then it isn't a bad thing OR you find it worth spending the money. If the game isn't worth spending money on, then IMO it probably isn't worth playing. As for cost/spending on a good game, I've spent anywhere from $2 to $60 on good regular games and have gotten a hundred hours out of and small handful of them. In MWO, I've played it as my main game, probably 90% of the gaming I've done for the last 2.5 years. NO TELLING how many hours in there, from closed beta to now. I've spent well over $200 on it over that time. Still cheaper per hour than anything else I've played that I can think of. I wouldn't spend that at ONE TIME on it, but when there's something going on that I see benefit in (new mech releases I don't want to save up for), I'll go for it. I want the game to last and continue to develop, so I support it. Those that complain and don't ever support it have no voice to complain IMO. It isn't like the game hasn't been worth ANYTHING if you play it for a few months. People don't play games they don't like for more than a few weeks. MWO isn't your usual MMO though, it doesn't have the usual grind, just combat and building. You never lose money, even in a bad round, unless you cause that yourself, so if you just play and save in-game currency, you'll get where you want to be without spending actual money. Spending doesn't give you an edge, just saves time. All premium content will come out for in-game currency after a few months, but even then you do not have to run premium content to be successful. New players will say otherwise, but that's only due to a STEEP learning curve to do well in the game. Only once have I spent actual money on a "real" MMO (STO), the only MMO that grabbed me at all. I didn't spend much on it, and got bored of it, but no regrets. It was worth what I gave them for the time spent. Oh, and a little $$ on an EVE sub, but again worth it. Most would find EVE interesting enough to play even briefly just to see that one in action. I would PREFER to buy a game and have it going on indefinitely, but as I think console games (non-COD or BF) have proven, most games you buy outright eventually lose their servers and die off since the dev/publisher stops making money at the checkout aisle. I'd trade MWO for Chromehounds in a heartbeat, but they pulled the plug on those servers after a couple of years. In about the amount of time I've spent on MWO already--but it's still here and going strong. So yes, I'll keep spending.

Been playing Mechwarrior Online for the last couple years. Really enjoy the gameplay. Technically for that game, you could get away with only buying mechbays. You need a mechbay for each battlemech in your garage. The mechbays are about $1.00 each, and go on sale (50% off) from time to time. Other than that spending money just reduces the 'grind'. Having said that, the grind isn't too bad in MWO, the games are enjoyable and gameplay is very well done. You can spend money on premium time to give bonus XP and Cbills. XP is used to level your mechs and unlock modules, Cbills is used to purchase mechs and weapons. We usually play Tuesdays and Thursday evenings (US) and are on TS here. Feel free to download it and join us for a few drops. The first set of matches you get a 'cadet bonus' to gain more cbills and xp, so that helps quite a bit if you group up with some decent team members. Depends on what you are looking for, really. Some people have spent hundreds on subscriptions for EVE Online and they usually have more than one "character," so that's multiple subscriptions. I've seen a guy with 16 accounts.... I guess so that he can play by himself? Yeah, that must be it Personally, I would rather have a subscription-based game such as EVE rather than a pay-to-win game that disguises itself as free-to-play such as World of Tanks. Sure, WoT is free-to-play but you will need gold/money for more garage spaces, better ammo, etc. It doesn't help as well that they now show you how much credits/XP you could've earned if you were on a premium account as well. And if you want to be competitive in WoT, you NEED gold ammo. WoT was fun while it lasted. I have a friend who is still playing, but it's really more grind than anything. My current MMO, if you can call it such, is Elite. Which is a third type of game I would much rather pay for --- buy the game once, and done. An example, I think, is Guild Wars. At the end of the day, I think it all really boils down to whether you think what you are paying for is worth your money (and time).

I would assume that when you pay a online subscription you get a dedicated server and regular new content WWII Online came out in 2001 and back then all MMO's were subscription based. There was no Free to Play. The first 3 months of WWII Online was indeed free because the game came out in such a horribly incomplete and buggy mess. After those three months you had to pay the monthly fee but the game was indeed updated on a regular basis. I cancelled after 3 years because I got tired of fighting on the same map over and over and over.

I just read on a gamer forum some guy reckons he spent two grand playing world of tanks. Seems excessive.

That's pretty excessive, but a fool and his money are easily parted as the saying goes.

How the hell can you spend 2000 dollars on World Of Tanks!? What an idiot. I've made it to tier seven without spending a penny. I think some of these guys miss the point of playing a free game. I play War Thunder tanks quite a bit, too. I've invested a big $3.75 for an M3 light tank. And it was only because you really couldn't progress any further if you didn't get it. So what the hell. I enjoy them. I've actually been spending more time with these games than with any of my sims. It's just, check your brains at the door, and have fun. Thinking of picking up that new age of sail game, next. Looks very good.

Wednesday night is World of Warcraft night with my son.
It's kind of Meh to me, but he really enjoys it....and it's all good male bonding time.
The opinions of this poster are largely based on facts and portray a possible version of the actual events. More dumb stuff at http://www.darts-page.comFrom Laser: "The forum is the place where combat (real time) flight simulator fans come to play turn based strategy combat."

Yeah, a lot of people I know do and they're not even close to what I'd think were gamers

How the hell can you spend 2000 dollars on World Of Tanks!? What an idiot. People can and will (willingly) pay a lot for their hobbies. Consider what a golfer pays, sometimes $50-100 for a round. Plus membership, if they go that route, lessons if they do that, all the golf crap... Getting back into fishing again after many years, I've put a lot into that. Kayak, trailer, naturally I need a couple of new rods, gear, rigging.... Many hunters join a camp rather than using public (free to play) land. That can run into thousands a year, plus hundreds or thousands in gear. A little harder to understand when it's digital and you don't have something to hold in your hand, but then they get many more hours of play time for the money spent. At least you don't have to make time away from home to play a game, unlike fishing, hunting, golf etc.
