I was wondering if there is any interest in doing some PvP among SimHQ members? This isn't for bragging rights or anything but more of a learning exercise. Kinda like Red Flag, but in space.
I realize that whatever happens, someone will lose money unless everybody fights on the freebie Sidewinder. While possible, I think it makes the exercise kind of moot because a lot of the learning how to fight in this game depends on the types of weapons used. So this might not be suitable for those still building up their credit base.
For those that are interested, I would suggest still using the freebie Sidewinder anyway, but upgrading it with different stuff like ECM, shield boosters, different weapon types, etc. It will still hurt to replace those, but at least it won't be as expensive as a Cobra or Viper. Having said that, if people want to fight using their own toys, that would be awesome as well. A Type-6 vs. a Cobra, who would win? I'd be very interested in finding out! Or a Cobra with fixed weapons vs. one with gimballed weapons, who would come out on top? If you were both in identical ships with identical loadouts, and you sneaked up on the other guy using silent running, will you be able to blast him in time before he turns around and kills you? All very interesting scenarios that is impossible to do with the AI but is perfectly do-able with a human opponent plus the learning and debrief process would be very cool as well.
Maybe if things kick off, we could add prizes or even just a bit of credit support....
Anyway, just thoughts for the moment. So, is anyone interested in some PvP for fun and learning?

We need a simulated friend on friend type, where you can engage and all damage is just simulated. Simulation ends on destruction or attacking a non simulated player

Brennus, that's a brilliant idea. Maybe 75% or 50% damage would be good. I guess it really depends on how fast the hull gets ripped to shreds. We could have an "abort" code for ceasefire, like "knock it off!" in air force parlance.

Wouldn't whoever fires first become wanted and have a bounty attached to them in this scenario?
Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty. This is known as "bad luck.” -Robert Heinlein

I lost my brand new Viper to a human player who interdicted me. I was about to type "hey how's it going" but got blasted before I can say hello. I'm going to stick to solo for the time being until we can reliably link up.
Could definitely use some practice dogfights if it doesn't severely hurt the bank account. I would suggest move out of whatever system you're in. It seems like there are two, maybe three common starter systems but if you move away from there, the number of human pilots drop significantly.

Interesting idea, but i only lost a ship in the game, and like to play with the mentality of not loosing my ship. So i'm not willing to risk that for practicing dogfight. It would be could if FG implemented somekind of simulation weapons, where you fight like the real thing but the damage is not real, you only get displayed the consequences on the hull and shield for the hits taken. Since i doubt the they would implement somekind of "Arena Commander" on Elite. About human players, i have noh ide if i ever encountered one. Don't know how you can know if the other ship is human or AI. Most of the NPC names look like possible human player.

If the name starts with "CMDR," that ship is human. Also, the ship will be an "empty box" in your radar as opposed to a filled-in box for AI.
As for losing a ship, well, the Sidewinder replacement is free. Or you could agree to stop shooting once the other guy has called "Knock it off!!" or when either one notices that the other is 50% hull or whatever value you decide on.

I'm going to stick to solo for the time being until we can reliably link up. What does this mean? TIA WC

Being able to "see" each other in the game is still hit-and-miss, mostly miss. We could be in the same system sitting outside the same space station, but the game will put us on different "instances" so we won't see each other.
