I am not sure but I think they tweaked the config file to make textures look high res even at higher altitudes.
I read somewhere that the steam version includes some tweaks. So that might be one of them.
Good to know FSX is still alive. The steam version will help with that.
Greetings,
They upped the max textures that CAN be loaded (although stock textures don't reach that max res, as far as I'm aware), and blew out the max load distance to a setting of 6, where as stock disk based FSX maxed at 4 unless you forced an override in the config.
FWIW, I am seeing some better performance, but that's also likely related to running a fresh FSX install.
That said, if you're going to run FSX, you might as well run the Steam version.
Does the Steam version include the Acceleration content? Will Orbx FTX work with it?
Yes. Content-wise it's essentially FSX Gold.
And Yes, ORBX works. I'm running FTX Global, all the NA regions (picked up on sale last week
),and Global Vector.
I am having issues with people-flow though. That might be an issue with my machine however, but I haven't been bothered to troubleshoot. To the credit of the Steam Edition, it 'intercepts' this issue with a error message on startup, and allows me to play without the faulty module running. Seems like the kind of thing disc-based FSX would have just choked on instead.
To date, I've installed the following without issue (each of these even found their way to the Steam Apps folder just fine):
-The A2A "GA Trio" (172, 182, PA28),
-Aerosoft F-14
-All of Dinos freeware (F35, T45, S3)
-The aforementioned Orbx stuff
-Every Carenado bird I've tried; Namely the Phenom and PC12
-OPUS FSX (although I'm encountering an issue with FSUIPC connections, but again could be an issue with my machine).
Only road block I've hit so far is TacPack and the SuperBug. VRS has openly stated on their forums that TP Simply won't work with Steam edition (and that trying would only break the install). They do plan to support it though, but it's next in line after P3D compatibility. IIRC they said they're hoping to get this sorted by the end of Q1.
FWIW, I've gone back to P3D for now, as without Tacpac, FSX has little hold on me outside of missions and Multiplayer (which I haven't bothered with yet). Plus, I just bought a new GPU, and P3D takes advantage of it, while FSX doesn't.
