So....one day, my computer fires up and it's like 6X8 resolution. Say's I need a video card, and downloads a Microsoft video card. Then I check and my EVGA 670 card is toast.
Today I received a replacement.
Question is, how do I uninstall the downloaded Microsoft temporary card, and reinstall the replacement.
Skatezilla helped me put the system together;
ASUS SABERTOOTH Z77; LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard CASE; Cooler Master HAF 932 RC-932-KKN5-GP R PSU; CORSAIR HX750 750W RT Intel CPU i5-3570K Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo) 77W Quad-Core HD Graphics MEM; CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) VIDEO; EVGA GeForce 'Signature' GTX 670 FTW 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP SLI Support HDD; 2 - Seagate Barracuda's 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s LITE-ON Black 12X BD-R 2X BD-RE 16X DVD+R 12X DVD-RAM 8X BD-ROM SATA 12X Blu-ray Burner with Blu Ray 3D Feature ASUS 24X DVD Burner - Black SATA Model COOLING; Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO MNTR; SMSNG LED 23.6" 2MS HDMI Win7 Professional SP1 64-bit
I have a new EVGA GeForce GTX 670 FTW Signature 2GB card, just came UPS, and I have to remove the toasted one and install the new one. I'm sure I have to remove the MS temporary display, that was automatically downloaded. But what order, and when do I reboot, and install the drivers on the DVD?
What's the order?

Should be able to shut the system down, install.new.card,.boot, it.should automatically install the drivers if they are still installed, if not re install nVidia driver package.
The ms generic display device is what windows installs when there are no.drivers availivle for the display device detected.

When I booted up with the toasted card, it was a cartoon image. It said I need a video display from MS...so it just downloaded it and rebooted with a normal display. So I assume....it downloaded a MicroSoft display, which I can see in my 'Device Manager'.
I was wondering if I should delete that first, then install the card, and run the original DVD that came with the 670 card, I still have it.
And BTW I removed the drivers for the burnt out card....so there are none installed right now, but I have the DVD.
IIRC I had to reboot a couple times, when first putting the system together.
It's been a couple years.....
Edit; Yes, it downloaded the drivers for the MB video...I think. But I didn't even open the case yet, didn't move the wires over. The old burnt card is still rotting in the case...lol.....

Edit; Yes, it downloaded the drivers for the MB video. You can right click and choose uninstall, then shut down. Install new card, boot up, If you didnt uninstall the nVidia drivers they should still be present, and automatically install, after which you may or may not have to reboot again, by then all nvidia control panel abd driver related settings/options should be restored. The drivers on the disc are likely outdated, if you need then download the newest from nvidias site.

OK...I got it. Remove the MoBo drivers, shut down, remove the toasted card, install the new card. Reboot and go to the Nividia or EVGA site and d/l the newest drivers for the 670 card. {as I have deleted the old drivers from the system when the old card failed. I need drivers.} After d/l'ing the new drivers, Reboot.
Is that it?
Or should I D/L the new drivers first, as I don't have 'any' for the new card. Then remove the MoBo drivers, shut down, remove the old card, install the new card, and reboot.

Download the installer package first, and save the install file to the desktop just in case windows comes back up i. vga mode (640x480), cuz Navigating newer websites at that resolution will get frustrating quickly.
You dont have to uninstall the windows generic driver as it will simply put it back until you.install your own drivers.
So: Goto evga's site, download driver package, save to desktop, Shut down, Remove defective card, Place new card in slot, connect any power cables, connect display to new card.
Boot Windows, Once Windows is done loading it may install a generic driver, just let it for.the time.being After everythin is.done loading, run the driver.installer.package as a admi. (Right.click, run as admin).
Go through the process, when finished reboot.
Done

Well, as usual....things didn't go as planned. First off, they sent me a different replacement card. They sent a EVGA 770 instead of the EVGA 670. So the drivers weren't correct. I uninstalled the drivers 'before' I put the new card in, but somehow it found them as soon as I booted up, and reinstalled them. It actually worked with the old 670 drivers! I had to remove them again, and then tried to install the correct drivers for the 770 card I had downloaded, but they wouldn't install. 'Error'. So I rebooted and tried again, and it did install them. Now I have the correct drivers, the card is working, but the fan bearings sound real loud to me. It's almost a 'squeak', like a bad bearing. But the card works....so I'll keep it, and be sure to 'buy' the extended warranty, cause I got a feeling.... Thanks for the help Skatezilla.... I appreciate it very much. I'm looking for a comparison between the old EVGA 670 card, and the replacement EVGA 770 card. Wonder if they sent me a better one, or a slower one? I haven't tested it yet, the fans squeak too much!...lol....I don't have much faith in it.

Murph check the fan to make sure nothings is touching it. Make sure the fan area isnt squished down a bit. I seem to remember having a loud fan on a graphics card a few years ago and it turned out the fan was touching the top housing of the card.
As for the 770 vs 670 I think its a minute difference, like 100MHZ core speed difference.

770 is a rebadged 680 w/ some voltage and clock tweaks, it's an upgrade.
nVidia's driver packages usually have a unified structure, the package should contain drivers for most of the GPUs from the last 8 years.

Good to hear! Just hope it lasts longer than my warranty. I'm afraid to run it with that 'squeak'.... Gonna keep an eye on the temp. Maybe open the case again and peek at the fans. But when it runs, the fans move, they push in on the axle/shaft, so you really can't be sure.

GTX 770 is definitely the better card. Here is Anandtech's benchmark comparison between the 2 cards: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1037?vs=1349

Thanks Walter! Appreciate that. I noticed the 'noise level' should be lower on the new 770, but it's certainly NOT. So I'm sure the fan is rubbing on something. I'm afraid to run it now. Gotta take it apart again, and find out what's 'squeaking'. Sent back the old one today. This one runs everything, like your link said, much better. It's just that the fan must be rubbing on the housing or something, to make the squeaking noise. It's really loud..... Yep, gotta open the case and take a look at it again, or I'll be sending this one back too. Found out it's $25 just to ship it, ground, one way! Stuff like that 'shocks' us old guys.....lol..... But it sure beats paying for a new one, again

Yeah, I have to do something. Running it like it is, will just burn it out. I'll take it apart tonight, if I get time. Right now, I'm going up on the roof and cleaning the flue, or 'nothing' in this house will 'overheat'...lol...
Home maintenance comes first. Gotta keep the 'wood burner' going, in Michigan....going down to 3F tomorrow night, with snow, and I don't want to be up on a snow covered roof then. Free heat, with wood.
Right now it's 21F, so I'll clean it up while it's dry, and 'warm'...lol....
