Hi,

I read in the ubisoft forum a post by Tully that says :-

I would suggest you put it somewhere other than C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86) incase you wish to run older games from Steam.

I have never used Steam before and want to be sure that Cliffs of Dover runs correctly and also with the Team Fusion patches.

Can one install Steam to any folder on any drive on a PC and why is he suggesting this , surely steam should be designed to have the install allow one to play older games from them ?

I also see a Cnet article
http://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-install-steamos-on-your-computer/
that says to install SteamOS one needs an empty usb HD as steam will nuke a normal one...what ???

I have purchased CloD jan 2013 and have an account name and confirmation code. I see I need to go to steam game library to install it. I trust it will ask me where the steam folder is, or do I install it elsewhere to steam ?

I would install Steam to its default directory,I have always done this.

When you install a game Steam asks where, the default is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam or you can create a new Steam library on another drive if you want to.

I have had no problem installing CloD and the TF mod in the default locations.

Steam OS is another thing altogether, ignore it for the purposes of installing CloD.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, I would like to find an F1 sim with JPS turbo era Black and golds and as it might be 'an old game' I wondered if I should follow the advice of use a different location. Ditto a sim flying Stirlings and Whitleys etc.
Surely though Steam would have all games work to its default location ?

Cnet SteamOS ignored....phew !!!

I think the reason for not installing some games is that they won't run from the 'Program Files' folder, maybe something to do with permissions? I'm not too sure about the reason. I run old games in Steam (inc ones requiring DosBox) and they all run fine in the default locations.

A sim flying Sterlings and Whitleys? I wish.

SteamOS is Steams own operating system, based on Linux.

My way:

Install STEAM in D:\STEAM - if I format Windows after, avoid some game re-install, just re-install STEAM and validate the games.

After log on STEAM, go to library select CloD and let STEAM install and update for last MG patch (12/2012).

After go to STEAM folder (\SteamApps\common\) and copy Clod folder.

Past in - example - D:\Cliffs of Dover.

Install TEAM FUSION patch's, pointing for this new folder.

Make a shortcut for Launcher.exe in this new folder, set for rum as administrator and disable desktop composition (AERO).

No problems with Windows UAC, no lost config files, make more easy manual install campaigns in CloD and have a updated backup - in STEAM folder - to install MOD again case mess something. wink

Hi Chucky,
I found a Stirling..at sim-outhouse...looks v good...seems to need FSX, not familiar with FSX. Have posted on this over at Civil Aviation, now wondering what version of FSX I need to run on win7 64bit pro and where to get it from. There is mention of it coming out on Steam late 2014 at wikipedia. Not there yet, but being an old sim, so it seems, I now wonder should I install steam to somewhere other than program folder ?

your wish ,,like mine , is to come true...I see now two Stirlings, also Hampdens , wellington and Whitley, all at sim-outhouse.

Desperate to install steam , you say default location will be fine.

Sokol1...you do different. Can I alter the english to your post (in bold) to check I have understood correctly.

Install STEAM in D:\STEAM - if I format Windows after, avoid some game re-install, just re-install STEAM and validate the games.
This is your D drive, not C drive.
I have a D drive for all my user created data, so I dont lose anything if I need to format C drive, as you also do.

Afterwards, log on to STEAM, go to library select CloD and let STEAM install and update for last MG patch (12/2012).

Where should Steam install this to ? D:\Steam ?

After go to STEAM folder (\SteamApps\common\) on the D drive and copy Clod folder.

Paste in - example - D:\Cliffs of Dover.

so we have both Steam and also Cliffs of Dover as separate folders both directly on D drive, not C drive.

Install TEAM FUSION patch's, pointing for this new folder. D:\Cliffs of Dover.

have I interpreted this correctly ?

Well I think it's fine but I understand what Sokol means. I've used Steam for 10 years and never installed it to anywhere but default.

As Sokol stated and I should have said, once CloD is installed make a copy of the folder in case any patching you do gets into a mess, then you can simply delete the folder and copy your back-up over and start again.

FSX? Ah well that's not for me,I don't fly civil sims.

Chucky,

Civil sims, me likewise...yawn !!! however its a start, but I would like to be taking off into a moonlit night and dodging flak etc over germany.

One could be a nightfighter Me110 seeking out Bomber Command as well. this would be so refreshingly different to the plethora of fighter sims.

three wimpys at dusk atop the clouds with sun setting, landing back on blighty in FIDO, navigating using H2S or Gee,

come on simmers, get developing please.

A bit of clarification on why some folks (like me) don't install Steam or a lot of sims under the Program Files directory:

Windows, as a bit of double protection for users, has some special protections in those folders - namely it won't allow modification of .cfg or .ini files done outside of the program itself. This is a good thing, as malware can't hijack programs and slip in a link to an executable someplace else, so that when one opens outlook it's not also running PornScammer3000.

For sims like IL-2: 1946, it's kind of a show stopper not to be able to tweak either in notepad, as a lot of the options aren't available for change within the program itself.

If one isn't messing around with .cfg or .ini files manually there's no reason not to leave it in the default install directories.

The opinions of this poster are largely based on facts and portray a possible version of the actual events.

I never install anything under C: unless its drivers or Windows related. (or badly coded
and doesn't give you the option to choose path)
Games on D
Work software on E
Data on F
so on so forth. Never had any problems.
