In all the books I've read, some drink more, some less, champagne, wine, egg nog, various mixes, but it's never been root beer.
Well,....Beer has been at the "Root" of many a first world war roust about, so in essence you could say Root Beer is not far off the mark!

[OvSatchel] Ah, the classic WWI dogfight! I have a 9 picture montage in my office/flight sim room.
As to the "root beer", "Peanuts" being a "family-friendly" comic strip written by a conservative, midwestern US protestant evangelical, the references to alcohol are visible only to adults!
Interesting, the Royal Guardsmen did a couple of "Snoopy and the Red Baron" songs, the second of which picks up on the "Christmas Truce" theme (though of course they could not have been concurrent even if a beagle DID take to flying his doghouse in combat). In "Snoopy's Christmas", our intrepid beagle's wings get iced and the Baron forces him down behind the enemy lines on Christmas Eve, only to offer a "Merry Christmas" and a holiday toast. Then they both flew off, "knowing they'd meet on some other day..."
Merry Christmas, my friends!

That's the third of three, HumanDrone. The second was "Return of the Red Baron." I remember all three, as well as had the Royal Guardsman's album on which they appeared.

OvS, I also loved that whole sequence from the Charlie Brown Halloween program. I was just turning 12 when it first aired in 1966 and was giddy to see the famous WWI ace highlighted like that. Was wildly interested in the 'Great Air War' even way back then.
And vonBaur, I had all three of those Royal Guardsmen's songs on 45s. Good times - good times.

Three RFC Brass Hats were strolling down a street in London. Two walked into a bar, the third one ducked. _________________________________________________________________________

Now I know I'm getting old - and yet I was only 11 in late 1966, slightly younger than RAF_Louvert, and I had maybe one of the records; but I'll have to go looking for that 2nd one, I'm not sure I recall it! I wasn't so interested in the Great War itself as I was aviation in general. And of course, "Peanuts" was at about the zenith of its popularity, having just produced the wonderful, unmatchable "A Charlie Brown Christmas" the year before.
Those two specials are on my "must watch" list every year, along with George C. Scott playing Ebenezer Scrooge in Dickens's "A Christmas Carol", and of course Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey in "It's a Wonderful Life".
Thanks, vonBaur!
