Regarding the Neanderthals, the evidence (particularly that we are here) would seem to indicate that Homo sapiens was the better killer. And still quite good at it.

Wishing I was in the La Cloche
Since posts have explicitly asked the question about our server, regardless of whether it was off topic or not, I will answer...

Our policy on Syndicate Server is to not have a policy (LOL), preferring that players police themselves and use the ban feature since our squadron members cannot be there to moderate 24/7, let alone even try to attend all of the Team Speak servers that various players may be using. In that respect 'Gunny' does not realize the complexities and difficulties involved in current MP formats, and seems to not be speaking from current experience but from forum posts anyways.

I almost exclusively fly our server, spending quite a bit of time there, and have rarely encountered any sort of the behaviour he alludes to. If anything people get pissed off by the occasional ram or shoulder-shooting event, and usually an apology is forthcoming and it blows over. I also fly other servers, usually under a different game 'persona' and seldom see anything different. Majority of pilots are very mature, and if otherwise, the group chat messages diffuse the situation.

That said, yes, there appeared to be a neo-Nazi based RoF squadron a few years ago that frequented several of the MP servers. As a squadron our members discussed their behaviour and dealt with offenses appropriately. Usually all we had to do was tell them to "knock it off" and they quickly left our server. What you have to realize is anybody can come back under a different game persona and we'd never know unless they continued their offending behaviour...

It is unfortunate that the anonymity of virtual gaming sometimes brings out the a$$hole in some people, and even I admit to succumbing at one point or another, but have on numerous occasions apologized. Those who have received PM's from me on the RoF forum can attest to this.

EDIT: and I wouldn't begin to pretend to think that any sort of anthropological comment was over anyone's head, used in an argumentative or metaphorical context or not. Perhaps one should consider that responses were meant to be out-of-context and tongue-in-cheek, not to be taken seriously. Anthropology is my career, so perhaps excuse my jesting as an example of geek humour. smile2

Thank you Bandy, the rules about your server are clear, and there is no control about what people say to each others as it is unpractical to control.

Hence, people could or do make racial comments to one another, and if you are not there or disregard it, will remains undetected. The point I made based on what I witness for some servers I visited is valid and the trend is real.

When it comes to the Neanderthal metaphor, I meant that the Neanderthal was a period in the evolutionary process of human being. Moreover, that was a time I did not want to revisit as a way of life, as much as the nazy ideology is in the past and this is an abject subject that I am not willing to re-visit, and I quote myself : "from we evolved for NEVER going back".

As a result people who have race concept in the forefront of their minds started to count DNA strands and percentage of Neanderthal DNA in Homo sapiens. It is like (in a loose interpretation) a Rorschach test, my comment brought out what was triggered in people mind, and not what I expressed. And there are some explanations/theory about that conditioned response, which I am not going to visit.

And if Anthropology (certainly a wide and interesting subject to me) is your career, Psychology is mine.

What is "La Cloche" by the way, a dig site?

And now let me introduce you BACK to The First Great Air War!...

Best never, ever talk to people over XBox Live.

"Hey, my ni----!" is the predominant greeting, regardless of presumed race of the participants.

RoF is WWI, though, so all that National Socialist Party stuff is unhistorical, and mostly the servers have old gummers like us in them who know better. I've never seen or heard any Nazi crap on an RoF (or even an IL-2) server, to be honest, and I've been mucking around in mulitplayer since RB3D.

On server pings, it's a mixed bag that can wax and wane for reasons of its own.

The Channel Map? That was quite some time back now, two years I think?

What happened IMO was the focus on Il-2 BoS meant ROF had little in the way of updates or new planes for over a year and outstanding issues caused rising disillusionment.
While there is little in the way of competition for WWI simming, I think a lot of people just went inactive on it.

I used to play PWCG regularly, and I still think it's awesome, but what happened is that the devs promised IL2 BOS Oculus DK2 support, with cues that the support for VR would find its way back to RoF. RoF was the perfect fit for the Oculus DK2, as you can fly without instruments and dogfighting in ww1 kites would feel amazing VR. But devs broke their VR promise (they blamed Oculus, and yet other sims and even 3rd party kept implementing VR support, DX9 or better) while I moved on to DCS and Prepar3d since flying in VR makes it hard to go back to monitor.
I still feel massively disappointed disappointed about that, but I'll either have to wait for someone else to do the ww1 sim of the future or 3rd parties to implement VR in RoF (Vireio would like to try supporting it).

I still fly ROF in single player quite often but for multiplayer I ONLY play it with friends on private cooperative servers. I haven't bothered with head to head dogfights on public servers since the 1990's.
