It seems to me that that consensus is being promoted all aroud us.. It seems as if in most sitcoms, most commercials that I see.. the guy is the boob, the kids and the wife always know more than dad does.. and I think it is a part of a concerted effort to emasculate men and the role of men.. and more importantly fathers in society.. At least that is what it seems like here in the U.S.
Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.
