Nazi Eagle recovered off the stern of the Graf Spee.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-30471063

I wasn't aware of this at all, and find it slightly disturbing. Looks like the recovery went completely under the radar at the time.

Cheers,
Slug

Yeah, it's interesting. Reminds me of my dad in a way. He was an avid WW2 collector but primarily German items for some reason (he, like most of my previous generation, was the "most are bad but I know a couple who are ok" kind of bigot but he was very clear on on how wrong Nazi views were). I inherited a few items and I've been debating for 26 years now on what to do with them because if I sell them there's a very good chance it'll be bought by a neo-Nazi.

There can be no discussion on the ideology but they sure made impressive "brand images".

This doesn't just happen with Third Reich memorabilia either. There are plenty of collectors who have USSR era memorabilia as well. The hammer & sickle is just as detestable as the swastika.

It went completely under the radar because humanity is too busy paying attention to other things like Kim Kardashian's ass and how many people Bill Cosby raped.

I remember the story on the news when it was recovered. It was a few years ago now, wasnt it? There was an interview with one of the salvagers who said that they when they brought it up to the surface and they saw the swastika everyone just went quiet.

I have a very good friend who has an uncle who says he has a flag off of the Prinz Eugen. He has no proof of its identity so may just be sailor's talk. My friend served on the Ark Royal (R09) and HMS Aeneas,an Amphion-class submarine. He has many interesting stories about his time in the navy.

Oh noes it's an ebil piece of Nazi iconography...who cares! I hate to say it but what does it matter who buys the chunk of bronze? Also how are they planning to keep it from being sold again to these possible neo-nazis?

*puts on Indie's hat*

It'd look amazing in a museum exhibit, send it back to Germany or the US where it can be used as an educational tool.

Panzer, it just not quite the same to a large majority of the public. Regardless of what the hammer and sickle represented, it's symbolism is not nearly as restricted as Nazi symbols. I used to collect WW I and WW II German stuff, but quit because there were too many fakes flooding the market. Obviously, primo German stuff is also much rarer since the Nazi regime ended many decades before the Soviet Union.

EBay will not let one list anything that shows either the swastika or SS symbols while they could care less about
former USSR stuff. They also forbid items associated with the KKK. However, nothing about the symbolism of the former Soviet Union. In fact hammer & sickle stuff is considered sort of campy.

I've been slowly selling off some of my militaria since I have no family to leave it to. I recently had a listing for a mint WW II German DAK (Africa corps)tropical pith helmet removed because of EBay offensive symbolism policies. I had covered up the Wehrmacht eagle/Swastika badge on the left side, but that wasn't good enough. It has to be removed and one has to pretend that it doesn't exist.

It wasn't caught right away, so I already had bidders on it and it was already up to $350 with a week to go when they pulled it. It would have easily topped $500--maybe even $600 since it was close to mint.

I sold a WW I enlisted cap a week earlier, but because it was Imperial Germany there was no issue. The same goes for former Soviet Union stuff too regardless of the period. Stalin's misdeeds against humanity just never got near the bad press that Hitler and his gang got.

One just has to play the game to get past EBay's uninformed, but politically correct police.

Cheers

So is Ebay still the best platform for selling memorabilia with swastikas?
