Yeah love it to see more outside flyby views, more angles and cuts and other stuff, towns, curches, front, battles etc. Vids which are not that much about dogfighting alone but rather telling a story. Keep them coming. Great stuff.

btw. have you ever taken the time for the allied and german newspapers to read all the other stuff besides the main message (pilot dead or offensive bla)? Advertisments and reports etc. Very beautifully done and always a joy to read.

Chasing down a large flight of 2-seaters looking to do some gardening behind our lines.

The aerodrome I was over at the end of the video was my own. Ended up being a short hop home!

Now THAT took some work! Another of those 'bullet sponges' that just won't go down...and pass-after-pass with no response and you figure the rear gunner's dead, and then, no, there's still another sting left in the tail. Am I right thinking those are blood spatters on your goggles? A little time in hospital?

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But in practice, there is.

Yep!

They got me around their second or third burst. Despite doing my best to stay underneath, in the blind spot of his tail. It was extremely hairy what with the expert marksmen in the observer seats and all the fire I took.

My poor Pup was all shot up when I got home. Spent a week recovering. But I got him worse in the end! Brought him down only a field over from my home 'drome so I brought back more trophies than just the bullet he gave me.

Edit: The rest of my flight were either killed or wounded, taking on those six DFWs from behind. I'm just glad my target went evasive and got separated from the rest of his pack or I'd probably be dead from the others.

Yes, very probably. I've read/seen in several places that German two-seaters were very adept at providing covering fire for each other.

Some were specifically tasked with doing so. I think this bunch was sent to bomb my own aerodrome, as that's where they ended up. We chased them in our slow Pups all the way from the lines (and about 2kft below). Our archie boys almost killed me, as you can see. They weren't holding back.

Almost forgot.. I got an MC for the mission. Too bad I can't properly celebrate the big show I put on over everyone's head while I'm recovering.

WOFF 2.02 Rear Gunners (theirs and yours) are Dangerous!

I used to be able to attack a trio of 2 seaters or Gothas by myself and very often come away only lightly wounded. No more! Now, unless I go in with a flight to help divide up their rear gunner fire, it's virtually suicide to spend any significant amount of time within their range...and that's exactly how I think it should be.

Kudos to the Devs for stepping up the realism and danger factors of engaging against flights of enemy recon and bombers. Not to mention the immersion factor of hearing bullets zipping by and / or slamming into the various parts of my plane. It actually generates a sense of fear and a real feeling that those back seat gunners are serious about killing you in order to save their own lives! Great stuff!

Don't spend more than a few seconds within their gun range! Boom & Zoom if you can.
Don't attack enemy recon or bombers unless you have equal or preferably superior numbers in your flight.
If possible, aim for their engines. They knock out fastest IF you can hit them hard enough.

I think it was McCudden who advised leaving two-seaters alone if they had seen you coming except (as you have said) if you had superior numbers.

I got ripped to shreds attacking some DFWs from their low six o'clock. However I continue to be assigned Observer/Gunners that LMF (Lack Moral Fiber). I've died on my last two sorties, providing a stable (wings level) platform and the b*stards simply let Jerry dive right down (in our aft hemisphere) and gun our brains out. Neither fired a single round in our defense. Ah such are the vagaries of life and death on the Western Front in 1917.

[Shrug...oh well]

busdriver, just curious but what is your squadrons morale / skill rating?

I noticed in a bunch of QC dogfights that my rear gunner doesn't always fire either, yet other times he hammers away pretty hard at stuff. I don't depend on him to keep me alive but he's also no longer a complete paperweight who's sole purpose is to block my rear view.

The ace was Edmond Jacques Marcel Pillon of Esc 102 flying N17 in 1916.

There are a number of factors that affect rear AI gunner performance, apart from the obvious ones:

1) Skill - three levels of Skill in WOFF

2) Morale - 0-10 and in QC this is randomly assigned at mission start to AI so its different for every run.
In campaign you can see the rear gunners morale levels in their dossiers - note that their morale may well decline dynamically in runtime based on what happens to them during the mission and this is tracked in the squad ratings. You can read more about this on our website in the AI sections:

http://www.overflandersfields.com/Features-Dev.html

and

http://www.overflandersfields.com/Features-AI.html

3) Status - if he is shot and injured or killed early on - he will of course no longer fire - remember he takes the bullets for you in most cases (human shield almost).... you can check his status by simply cycling to his station and if you can fire great - if not he is dead!
We are working on improved status display of gunner stations for the pilot during runtime but scheduled only for next year and no promises when.

Finally I guess I should list the obvious factors that affect rear gunner ability to shoot or hit a target:

1) Gun accuracy - scaleable in workshops
2) Current Craft Pitch and Roll angle
3) Current Rate of Change of Craft Pitch and Roll Angle
4) G force

The AI pilots are seemingly better at observing points 2 3 and 4 in general (also AI Pilot Skill factor affects this) to help their rear gunners shoot optimally than players are. But with practice players can be as good.

The enemy gunners do quite fine. As I'm sure everyone's aware.

But the ones riding in my own aircraft have been nearly always silent in the past. *shrug*

Thats what was addressed in the recent patch and what Hellshade has demo'd in his vids above.

If you can make a specific audio sound for the rear gunner getting killed, may I suggest the following audio clip from the movie The Crow?

I mean...like then you would just know...right? biggrin
