From one of my favorites, the Robert Redford movie Quiz Show. That's Martin Scorsese as the TV network executive. In this movie, the supporting cast all around was superb. I enjoyed them more than the top billed actors.

The one that came immediately to my mind was David Bowie as Tesla in "The Prestige". He was fantastic imho.

Great cameos...hmmm...tie between Bill Murray in Zombieland and Bob Barker in Happy Gilmore.
In recent memory, I can think of 3 in the same movie. All were in the Coen bros. movie adaptation of the Charles Portis novel "True Grit"
Matt Damon as the Texas Ranger La Boeuf Josh Brolin as Tom Chaney Barry Pepper as Lucky Ned Pepper
Pepper mostly plays character roles, while of course Damon and Brolin have more leading roles. However, in this movie, they all managed to apparently subvert any sense of themselves to become the characters they played.
This adaptation was so superior to the old John Wayne version that it makes the former look like a parody in comparison. Glen Campbell and Kim Darby were so wrong and so terrible for their roles in the older movie that I simply can't watch it now.
Cheers

I never liked the John Wayne film- but then, there are few films from the period I did like. That was back when Hollywood had very strict guidelines, when government censorship was very much a reality in the motion picture industry, and generally filmmaking ideas were still sort of crap.
The Coen Brothers' True Grit is quite good, my only complaint is Jeff Bridges' lines are often incomprehensible.
My favorite character actor of all time was J.T. Walsh (A Few Good Men). Always played tedious bit parts and eccentric characters, always watchable, died in 1998.
J.T Walsh in Sling Blade - probably NSFW

Thanks Mechanus for posting that. I've always liked him too for his character acting. I did not realize that he passed away and some 16 years ago no less. That's sad. He always seemed to show up in Kurt Russell movies. I wonder if they were friends. I too liked him in A Few Good Men and he was a real creep in Breakdown.
+1 for Bowie in "The Prestige". A scene that came out of nowhere with Bowie playing Tesla was just a good "blow my mind" moment. I remember leaning over to my Dad "That's David Bowie"!
Another one that got me was a scene in "A Face in the Crowd" with Andy Griffith. One of my favorite movies. I must have seen the movie twice by this time but there's a scene where Walter Matthau walks into a bar he frequents and says hey to someone in passing and its Burl Ives!

Speaking of character actors I've always liked David Warner, Bruce Greenwood and Dean Stockwell quite a bit.

Bob Barker in Happy Gilmore was already mentioned.
For me the best was:
General Chuck Yeager as a local in Poncho's bar in The Right Stuff.

lol Doc. I noticed that right away when I first saw Willy Wonka. The movie was shot in Germany so I guess the prank of using a picture of Bormann made sense.

Babylon 5 had some really great one-time appearance guest stars. Brad Dourif, David Warner and Tony Todd were also very good.
