Can the M163 Vulcan fire when on the move or does it have to be stationary to engage?

I can't speak for the DCS modeling but, I know having served on the real ones during the 80's, that it could not or at least it was not recommended. It had a suspension lockout system to stabilize the gun platform during firing and if I recall the max speed with them extended was 2-3 mph. It was like riding a rock, you'd always know when the driver forgot to retract it. That said, if you just wanted to sling lead then I suppose it would have been possible but not at all accurate.

OK - that jibes with what I saw playing a mission earlier. Some Vulcans on the move that, to my surprise, did not engage me. I guessed (correctly I suppose) that they might not be able to shoot while moving. It appears ED modeled them such that that is the case. Thanks for the info..

I don't think any ground vehicles move and shoot at the same time, at least not AI. IIRC, the ROE they have is Detect threat ---> Disperse ---> Halt ---> Engage.

Definitely not true. Haven't you seen the M1 - T72 tank battle in one of the A-10 missions?

Actually not. I thought the AI reaction was the same regardless of whether a plane or ground vehicle attacked. I mean, I can't recall the AI ever keep driving when my bombs start dropping close to them, they always seem to stop at that point.

The default AI reaction to being attacked by an air threat is to disperse for a period of something like 500 seconds. This behavior can be disabled in the group's AI options, as can the length of time the unit remains dispersed.

The reaction to ground threats is totally different. They'll just keep plugging along on their set path until they're dead, the enemy is dead, or they've reached their destination. The only exception I can think of is if they're using a weapon that requires the vehicle to remain static (e.g. an ATGM).

Ah..yeah, that tank battle that stood out to me was from Georgian Hammer. It was one of the first times I flew a mission that was integrated with Combined Arms in that you could hold or send the tank platoon from the A-10C depending on when you wanted to do it. I sent mine too early and as the Abrams advanced they got eaten alive by the T-72s. The Abrams were returning fire while on the move...

And I can't tell you how many times I've been shot out of the sky by BMPs (?) that are on the move in a column. I can't remember which vehicle it is..but is shoots a guided missile of some sort..

Abrams and T72s can engage tgts IRL while on the move because the gun has a stabiliser and will track and autolead the tgt while moving. Stabilisers have been around for a while, Tungaska can also fire while on the move from what I know only its gun it has to be stationary to fire its missiles IRL.

Like the BMP's the Bradley 25mm and 7.62 can as well although we had to stop and kick the SKIB's (Stinger kids in the back) out to engage with stinger - pre linebacker
