Brian Nelli and a friend were fishing from kayaks on November 7. After hooking a 16-pound mahi, they found this huge hammerhead shark evidently very interested in their fresh catch. Nelli says the shark showed up just as winds picked up and the water became choppy. He also notes the shark was about as big as their kayak -- around 13 feet.

This is why I normally keep both feet planted on dry land! lol fearful

Interesting stuff. A few months ago I was at Myrtle Beach and had hooked into a 5' shark while bottom fishing. As I was battling with him I noticed my kayak was acting funny and at first I discounted it to the wave action. I got the shark up beside the boat, cut the barb off with my wire cutters, slid the hook out and off he went. Meanwhile, I'm struggling with my hips to keep the kayak upright. I know the plug is in (I always check that multiple times before I get in). I pop the rear hatch and water is filling the inside of the kayak. Craptastic. The ten minute paddle back to shore was extremely difficult as the kayak became more and more tippy. Beached it, and found a cracked seam at the back of the poly kayak where years worth of dragging it across the sand had worn the plastic thin. Water was pouring in there the whole time. Pro tip: don't sink where you are catching sharks.

I have seen sharks longer than my kayak (it's 9') swim by beneath me. Always unnerving. Keep waiting to have my run in with Mary Lee: http://www.ocearch.org/

Back when I used to live in Cairns, Queensland, we often saw sharks off the reef that were longer than our boat, and that boat was a 15 footer. The sharks would rub themselves on the hull when we were fishing at night and in our flashlights we could see that they stuck out at both ends.

We used to sit VERY quietly until they left.

that Hammerhead shark only wanted lunch - likely a human would of done just fine - who knows - maybe it's tasted human before

Yikes!
Going to fix it? I've seen some how to videos on youtube.
Should finally be getting my kayak this weekend. Keeping my fingers crossed nothing goes wrong.
Just in time for the coldest Nov we've had in decades. LOL

I have to laugh at the pair of ladies in the second video. You're confronted with a large shark harassing you as you're kayaking, and your solution is to call 911? LOL

If you find yourself in the company of a shark which is bigger than your boat, the solution is naturally to get a bigger boat.

Suffice to say I'm safe:

I don't think so. The kayak is really beat up..and it was a surf kayak and not a real fishing kayak, so I'll probably just replace it with a real fishing kayak. Something with some storage and a bit more room...

I remember my nephew sending me pics from his Marine days of swimming off the back of the amphibious ships and having sharpshooters on shark watch...

Reminds me of an old german joke:

"What."
"A shark ate my wife !"
"Hmm, yes, they do that."

This is a good time to buy. There are places like ACK and Appomatox that are selling clearance models with good discounts. Used can be good too.
I was pointed to a facebook group for selling kayaks. Had to sign up to join the group to get in touch with a guy, but I found one that was otherwise out of my price range for several hundred off. Never used!
A local Hobie dealer had a used 16' with the Mirage drive for $1500, but I bet they would take less. I think that would be the ideal kayak, if shorter for lakes. Those things haul butt with that drive unit.

I would never kayak in the ocean. I'll stick with freshwater lakes.

Looks like fun.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

I went for my first kayaking experience in the sea. Because I 'knew it all' I chose one that had 'Sport' on the side. What that actually meant was 'difficult to handle'.

And lo it dumped me in the sea quite a way out. I had a life-jacket on but I hadn't swam for ages. After various attempts to get back on the thing I was too tired to try again and had no choice but to swim back to shore one-handed with my other hand hanging on to the kayak for dear life.

Not a few months before there had been great excitement in the area when a shark came right into the shore,it was an 8ft Porbeagle which I don't think is dangerous to man.I must have been mad.

Anyway, both incidents convinced me NEVER to go in the sea again.
