To mark the centenary of the start of the Great War a very visual memorial to the cost of that war has been made at the Tower of London.

A hand made ceramic poppy placed for each of the 888,246 British and Commonwealth war dead.

Oh my, that is... stunning.

Have they said what they will do with the handmade ceramic poppies afterwards?

They've all been sold and the proceeds will be split between six service charities.

wow, stunning indeed and sad also to see how many gave their life

It would also have been cool to get them to the ancestors of those who died

I saw the poppies last month (in London to see Kate Bush).

They have been placing them for some time and it was an impressive sight. Nice pics.

Very nice. A fitting tribute both on display and afterwards!

Went to see them yesterday, got there about 8 am so very few people were there and had time to reflect. I did walk past this morning though and it was heaving with I'd say a few thousand people.

The bizarre thing about it is all the people taking selfies. It was really getting to me. Maybe someone will laugh and take selfies in front of a memorial to them some day.

Wow. I saw the article on the begin of the setup, but this is mind boggling. You would hope that mankind has learned from this mess, but looking at what people like the IS are doing today...

It took from beginning of August to plant them all.
They're apparently mostly already sold, and will be
delivered to their purchasers as soon as they are
taken down.

They've all been sold, I think they were £15 each. My sister got one for our family. The money is being split between six armed forces charities.

I might be wrong, but I think they have also been reading out all 888,246 names at the Tower as well.
