I've dabbled with creative writing while I was deployed in the service these past few years. I'm in school now and want to write a book from the viewpoint of a fictional RFC character. Does anyone have any good references for sources? For instance, anything involving their flight training, what the average squadron was like for a fresh pilot. I'm trying to avoid the stereotypical movie scenario that everyone seems to be in line with.

Any input would be wonderful guys. Figured this would be a good forum to share the rough draft with too.

Cool idea.

Best source I can think of to get an idea of the emotion, atmosphere and overall daily life of a WWI pilot is a book call War Birds: Diary of an Unknown Aviator. It's literally a published book that was once the personal diary of a WWI pilot.

It was edited and illustrated by Elliot White Springs.

"Combat Report" by William Lambert - daily life of a SE5a pilot of 24 Sqn in 1918. You may be able to get a second-hand copy.

Tumult in the Clouds: The British Experience of the War in the Air, 1914-1918 by Nigel Steel & Peter Hart is an excellent for that kind of writing.

"No Parachute" or "Open Cockpit" by Arthur Gould Lee.
Experiences of scout pilot with 46 Squadron in France 1917.
"Open Cockpit" contains his training days and, from what I hear, is a expanded version of "No Parachute" which I have read multiple times.
