I think the issue is that with modern engines you don't have a graceful failure that would allow the saving of a twin engine plane anyway.
It seems that with the increase in reliability the likelihood of a simple flame out or other benign failure has almost vanished, but the catastrophic ones remain. When your engine blows, it doesn't matter if the 2nd one didn't because the first could damage the 2nd as well or surrounding systems to the extent that the plane is lost anyway. So having two engines doesn't statistically improve the odds of survival given an engine failure, and since there are now twice as many engines in a fleet of twins your odds of having those catastrophic failures actually means they're twice as likely to occur.
Remember the era of 4 engined passenger jets is almost over, they're all going to twins now. Being podded below the wing allows greater protection from catastrophic failure, plus an airliner isn't a combat plane anyway.

what was the last single engine NAVY aircraft on a carrier... AV-8. Not Navy. Yes Navy. Spanish Navy, Italian Navy, and (up until recently as Harrier IIs) Royal Navy. Edit: Sea Harriers in the Indian Navy as well.

I thought the Navy always wanted a twin engine plane in case of engine failure over the ocean. Cost. Twin engine costs significantly more than what the losses would be from single engine failure.

Man, looks like they were taking a pretty good amount of roll there too- probably made for a more interesting carrier testing.
