Another crowdfunded "Fan Fic" movie, set between "Enterprise" (NX-class ships) and "Axanar".

Why men throw their lives away attacking an armed Witcher... I'll never know. Something wrong with my face?

Wow! Looks great! Sounds far more interesting than any movies since First Contact. Thanks to fans, we actually get some good ship battles. Hollywood sucks.
I love the idea of going with the Enterprise era. If only it was still the NX-01, I loved that ship.

Would have liked to see the refit NX class with the secondary hull added.

That's my problem with most of these fan-made projects.

World-class visuals with Disney World-class (like Jungle Boat ride) actors.

Axanar is an exception as most of its cast is actually current and former SF actors.

The cast of Axanar is absolutely great.

Dang. That's some bad acting. Ouch. A waste of some perfectly good special effects.

Didnt want to say that, but I agree. The acting is amateurish.

This and Axanar show there is no excuse for us not having a top notch, space battle and cgi heavy scifi series. CGI has gotten to the point that you don't have to be cutting edge to have incredible visuals. No more "it's too expensive to produce" excuses.
It's ridiculous that fans have to come up with their own content FREE to fill the void. Enterprise first aired 13 years ago and the cgi from that period is still just fine.
It won't be long before fans create something new, that they CAN make money off of and attract talent to fill the roles. Movies and traditional tv channels are going to miss the boat.

I can see your argument and I largely agree with you but the fact remains that in the real world network and cable channels simply prefer to produce other types of shows that they believe will get bigger ratings than what a Star Trek series would get. Would SyFy be interested considering their recent change in direction? I think so but I don't think they would have the money to produce a Star Trek show. And besides, they would have to get licensing clearance from CBS first since CBS owns the rights to any kind of televised Star Trek.

The one point you made that won't be happening though are fan films or shows making money. That will not be happening as long as CBS owns all rights to any kind of televised Star Trek and Paramount owns all rights to any kind of theatrical/film produced Star Trek.

I wasn't referring to ST though, but something completely new.
Screw ST. If that license is locked up tight, then its time to move on to something new and exciting. Worked with Babylon 5, worked (in retrospect) with Firefly. Fans may eventually put together some good original content.

Channels do produce a variety of programming, it isn't ALL designed for the biggest audience. If that was the case it would be 24 hrs of CSI crap. They accept lower audiences if the cost works. Drama, sitcoms etc are cheap since you have a set or two, live locations requiring no building and nothing but writing to do...until you have to pay the stars you made. Then they make a spinoff.
They could make a good scifi show at reasonable cost these days if they didn't feel they had to bring something new to the table in the CGI department. B5 proved you could use sets creatively, but they could probably do the same thing with green screens these days and do it better while not running up cost a lot.

TV programming is nothing new. It was the same formula when TOS was on, TNG...whatever. It's not like this is new. For a few years there the broadcast channels were going broke, but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Syfy does seem to be doing better as well, and certainly AMC, HBO, Netflix etc. Someone could do this, and eventually they WILL or, like I said, groups of scifi fans out there will keep on doing what they're doing now and getting better and better at it. Then we don't need the networks anymore. You never know, if Wheddon ever gets the Firefly license wrapped up, you may find him heading an indie project like this just to prove a show can be successful on the internet, independent of the networks. He experimented with that with his son on Dr Horrible. It was probably just a bit too early. If anyone could get an original cast back for an experiment like that, it would be him and the Firefly cast.
I'm all for some completely new franchises though.

I'm surprised that HBO hasn't given sci-fi a chance yet considering how financially successful they've been the last few years with such massively succesful shows. If anyone on cable could afford an epic sci-fi series with high production values it would be them.

It would rock if HBO made a scifi show
Or AMC. We might fi ally get something halfway intelligent and well made. Defiance is a perfect example of how mediocre TV scifi is.

Showtime has always been the channel that went for SF, but while they were strong in the 90s there they really let it lapse.
I think Odyssey 5 was the last one they did?

With Netflix leading the way into internet based a la carte network subscribership, we might see a subscriber based scifi channel in the future.

We can hope. That would be great indeed if it ever happens.

Not ST, but another fan made project for Dragonball. Noticed it linked in that SyFy channel article.
It's amazing what fans can do now and underscores that there's enough of a market that fans are putting together
their own teams to CREATE content. Sad that they can do things for free that studios can't do at all.
Sure, the acting isn't professional quality (or rarely is), but the production quality is impressive.

Odyssey 5 started out so promisingly but seemed to lose its way somewhat. Then got cancelled with no resolution.
