I believe you are under the mistaken impression that they had answers that they never got around to giving.
Instead, they didn't give answers when they felt that none of the answers they could come up with were satisfactory, so they left them without explanation because it was less disappointing to not know than to be told something lame.

He's had 10 years now to figure something out. I could come up with about 15 different explanations within a week if I had to.
Perhaps there is no "official" explanation and it has been left open for each viewer to draw their own conclusions like you said you have done yourself? Many writers and directors leave things open because they don't feel that everything needs a concrete explanation.
