I'm guessing the cause was some sort of mechanical failure but I'll be curious to see what the investigation discovers. I'd also be curious to know how old that F-15 airframe was.

They haven't made an F-15D in over 25 years, so it wasn't new. How well it was maintained is a separate issue, after all the B-52s are all over 45 years old and they're not dropping like flies.

I just checked, and the last B-52 (#61-040) rolled off the production line 22 JUN 1962.

Every time 48FW is in the news, it makes me miss Lakenheath. I was on duty when we had an F-15E's left main gear snap on touchdown. I personally saw it happen. It skidded off the left side of the runway, and the cockpit snapped off right behind the WSO. Both survived, and I believe both eventually went back to flight duty.
I was also there (though not on duty) when one of them went through a hush house door on afterburner. With the crew chief in the seat.
Glad to hear that there were no serious injuries.

I'd also be curious to know how old that F-15 airframe was. 1986 by the tail number.

Isn't that the year the contract was let, not the necessarily the year the airframe was made?

Isn't that the year the contract was let, not the necessarily the year the airframe was made? http://www.joebaugher.com/usaf_serials/usafserials.htmlStarting on July 1, 1921 (the beginning of FY 1922) a new serial number system was adopted based on procurement within each Fiscal Year. Each serial number now consisted of a base number corresponding to the last two digits of the FY in which money was allocated to manufacture the aircraft, and a sequence number indicating the sequential order in which the particular aircraft was ordered within that particular FY. For example, airplane 22-1 was the first aircraft ordered in FY 1922, 23-1 was the first example ordered in FY 1923, etc. This system is still in use today.

AFAIK the names of the crews on that mission are still classified.
Last time I think they were in the news was for sending F-15Cs to the Baltics a few months back, when the tensions in Ukraine were kicking off.
I read Air Force Times and follow @48FighterWing on Twitter to keep up with them.
