Not being a rifle person....I was asked by a friend, who BTW supplies me with deer meat, whether there was a real difference between a 'muzzle loader' scope and a regular 'rifle scope'. But I really don't know for sure.

Right now there are several muzzle loader scopes that are no longer in stock, due to the hunting season being upon us.
But I was thinking that one could actually just use a regular rifle scope, instead of buying a dedicated 'muzzle loader' scope.

So what's the difference?
Is there really any difference?

Why not just buy, say a Nikon ProStaff 3X9X40 scope and stick it on a muzzle loader, black powder rifle?

Right now it's cheap compared to some muzzle loader scopes, that I think are inferior.
So, could one do that?

Just any opinions would be appreciated, as I don't know much about rifles....or scopes.

I am inclined to say....marketing. Sort of like there is no reason to not mount a "regular" scope on a rimfire rifle. Although the other way is a bad idea. Well a muzzle loader is a "rifle". Just loaded from the front. Unless its doing something like bullet holder over stuff for large heavy somewhat slow moving projectiles I really don't get it.

That's what I was thinking.

Just a way to get people to buy a new and 'specific' product.
But a muzzle loader would be less 'kick' or 'shock' on the scope...then a regular center fire rifle would.
So why would one 'need' a muzzle loader scope, instead of a regular decent rifle scope.
I see you can get a nice Nikon 3X9X40 ProStaff BDC scope for $159.00 right now.
The black powder scopes are well over $200, and I don't see that they are as good quality.

So is that true?

I hate to 'advise' the guy, when I really am not that well informed.

Regular will work on a blackpowder. Just try it out by mounting and checking eye relief. Blackpowder doesn't have as sharp a recoil, but it has a long recoil. Some say the parallax can be a problem, but I've not seen that personally. However, I've never fired blackpowder with a scope. A 3-9 will certainly be OK for magnification.

Thanks OG. I was hoping you would chime in here. Appreciate it.
He uses it for deer hunting, not target or sport shooting...some of his shots are well over 100yds, and you only get one shot, usually.
And a kill shot is necessary unless you like tracking at dusk. A scope is very useful in those situations.
This is for an Amish guy in a wheel chair...so I'd be the tracker...and I don't track well. wink

Parallax?
I'll google it, so nobody will know how uninformed I am......... wink
