I don't know exactly why this works yet but for the first time EVER I have both Tornado and F-14FD running smoothly under DOSBox!

It started with a DOSBox Config tweak that somehow fixed Subwar 2050 (another first, such a good day I'm having! biggrin). Holy crap, I played for a while to confirm that everything would continue running smoothly on full graphics.

Then I had an idea...

I copied over the self-running Subwar demo, started and the then exited Subwar to the DOS prompt to continue using the tweaked GOG Config settings, started the demo and it worked perfectly too!

So then I copied my Tornado and Fleet Defender game folders to my Subwar folder and did the same thing. Flew around in both and they're running silky smooth! I freaking can't believe it!

So after all this time I seem to have finally hit the 'magic' DOSBox config settings that allows these games to run smoothly on my PC (and possibly my laptop, much more experimenting to do tonight). I just need to document the tweaks by GOG and whatever I may have done in addition and I'll post my findings later on this thread.

Great news, Tornado was a fantastic game, as was FD. I will have to dig out my copy from the garage. I have tornado on cd and the desert storm add on is on floppys.. frown

Thanks, HarryR. Add Evasive Action as now working properly, also applies to my laptop.

What I've deduced is that the current Subwar 2050 Config is the best solution, after changing output= from surface to overlay. Here's the changes from the stock Confg...

But the odd thing is that F-117 (since the latest patch) is also working perfectly now, yet it changes many settings back to stock.

Changes from Subwar 2050 to F-117...

So I don't know, I may try later to make more standard revisions. I'm just glad it's all finally working fine now, I'm busy tonight printing Manuals and reference cards.

I loved Fleet Defender. Never got to try Tornado though unfortunately.

They're both just too old now to even attempt to get back into for me.

I refuse to buy a flight sim that I have no interest in playing, on the off chance that MAYBE someday they'll make the one I really want to play.

I remember that for Tornado I needed to select the Adlib option in the sound menu, Soundblaster had some incompatibility problems in Dosbox (the selfrunning demo wouldn't run for example).

By the way for fullresolution= I always set it to desktop (fullresolution=desktop) and I use output=opengl, I find surface and overlay look too sharp for LCD's.
And I set aspect=true for an unstretched image.

If you have speed issues try setting core=dynamic, I found that a lot of 3d games run better then.
I hardly ever touch the sound config, note that increasing buffersize may result in soundlag (common problem with GOG games).

Dosbox just recognizes 2 joysticks and often Dos games only support one joystick (F-117 for example) and just two axis and two buttons.
If you want to alter the joystick or keyboard layout press Ctrl-F1 when Dosbox is running, this will take you to the mapperscreen.

Alternatively the Dosbox wiki has a lot of the settings explained.

Evening hours atmosphere in F-14FD are what I expected from the talent that went on to make Jane's F/A-18.

And Tornado's mission planning is every bit as comprehensive as I'd always read about.

As far as being too old, I believe it's what you're use to. I've long retired my post-DOS-era games (except AOE I) so I'm use to 320x200 and 640x480 (or 640x400). It's like reading a book (currently almost finished with Larry Bond's Cauldron...recommended), you have to let your imagination fill in the visuals. But I never could go from new to old (retired EF2000 many times after playing FreeFalcon and MSFS 2004, too hard looking back).

<Typing this as I'm formatting a box of Verbatim 3.5s while listening to "Exit Stage Left" on tape...lol (convenience, my CDs are all packed away and my Shuffle is charging).>

Added my vote at GOG to add...

F-14 Fleet Defender
Tornado
Archimedean Dynasty

Priceyplanecrasher,

I'm going to experiment more today and methodically check each setting to see which one(s) was the culprit. But I saved what I have because everything now is running beautifully! thumbsup

Also, I have full function of my Logitech Wingman Extreme 3D Pro in F-117 using the Logitech profiling software (set to Persistent). Only thing I can't map is Throttle slider so I mapped up and down throttle keys (+ and -) to JS buttons. Usually I use the keyboard number keys anyway since throttle is incremented by 10% and each setting is assigned a key.

But all 12 JS buttons are mapped and functional in F-117 including hat for 2D pit views.

EDIT: I need to add a secondary Shift function for hat to double for Targeting Camera views.

Oooh, I gotta try this (along with your other settings). Thanks.
