I found Woody Allen a great director, enjoyed much(but not all) of his movies. We, in France, have lots of overated film directors that you in the US never heard of, lucky you !...but we have too very talented ones...that you never heard of and that's a pity IMO.

Yeah it seems that his height of popularity as a director subsided a while ago. I think Clerks II was his last film that made any kind of splash. Ugh, Clerks 2 might as well have been Jersey Girl 2. OK dude, we get it, you're aging, but you're still edgy and witty. Really. Red State was pretty good, but didn't get the press coverage it really should have.

I'm embarrassed to say that the only current French director I know is Luc Besson.

I also know Jean-Pierre Jeunet, but I don't know if he's considered famous or infamous. Amlie is probably his best rated film, with Audrey Tautou pre-DaVinci Code, but of course Alien Resurrection was his largest. The Jedi Master

Agreed on Red State being quite good. That film had independent distribution, and therefore a low marketing budget. Smith basically abandoned the mainstream Hollywood system after the failure of Cop Out due to undue intervention of the studio, and what turned out to be a nightmarish work relationship with star Bruce Willis. Not to mention, critics shredded the movie to pieces. His next independent release is Tusk, a horror/comedy movie, that already earned some praise from early screenings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60EUG-CDC_k

I've never seen one of his films, either. Not my type.
