Mission 06
March 18th
Airfield transfer

Ok, were are moving. I didn't ask to lead this flight. already had a plan. I climbed out and went for altitude to the side of our soon to be former field and waited for either flight to head that way. Situated myself between the two with an altitude advantage. As we came close to our new airfield I saw A-Flight heading in to flak bursts, very heavy flak bursts. I circled above and at a distance until B-Flight caught up then I dove in. Took out a SPAD chasing an A-Flighter in landing pattern. Pulled a half loop and saw another SPAD, repeat..

The rest of the SPADS fled as B-Flight came in. I thought of landing then but decided to let them have their pecking order about the procedure and to play hawk above our new airfield. All of a sudden bullet strikes hit and I dive that Pfalz as fast and straight down as it could go. I drag my attacker over the airfield and watch the ground AA and gunners go off. I reverse direction, with a 180 roll and hard stick pull and target my attacker, now clearly a Strutter. after peppering his nose as he tried to turn I saw him trai9ling away engine smoking and lower left wing shredded from trying to dive with me. I also see he has a wingmate.

After slamming the two Strutters I scoped out the new airfield and landed

That is 6 missions for week one. I advanced a day and the n tree for passing the ten kill mark. Found out I'll be piloting an Albatross DV when I fly again. Time to try a new skin.

Dear Mother,

I have contributed to the glory of the fatherland, and I hope have made you and father proud! I scored my first confirmed kill yesterday, a SPAD S.VII. We observed the enemy machines from a distance, but my flight leader led the flight in the most curious intercept pattern one can imagine.

I decided to take a more direct route, and was quickly in a 3 vs. 1 battle. My erstwhile pursuers were thrown into disarray, though, when I pulled a quick reduction in throttle, combine with a hard pull upwards to the left, towards them. I heard a massive crash behind me, and saw that two of my attackers had collided! One was nowhere to be seen, the other was streaming thick black smoke, straggling westward.

The remaining SPAD and I tangled for a bit, but I was able to get a bead on him and damage his plane sufficiently for him to head for home. Luckily, I was able to send a small burst into him that must have hit the pilot, as the SPAD immediately spun out of control and spiraled all the way into the ground.

After this, I rejoined my flight for a quick return to base. I have been awarded an Erbacher in celebration of my first confirmed kill. I was very pleased, and the boys were simply wonderful tonight in the bar, making sure that I didn't pay for any of my beers.

Don't worry, mother, I only had two beers all night and was perfectly sober when I went to bed. I'm in a happy mood and look forward to doing my duty in the future.

Guten nacht,

Willy

Wow, MudWasp, you are an animal in that Pfalz! Good show, and great hunting. I look forward to seeing what you come up with as a skin for your new Albatros.

Yes, MudWasp, my hats off to you and anybody else flying a Pfalz as that's a hard plane to survive in at this point in the war...really any point as far as I'm concerned!

It's great in a dive and a loop or a half loop.
Love the cockpit visibility and the clear view of where the rounds fly.

Yeah.... it's kinda under powered and sucks in a turn fight.

Dear Mother,

I died in combat today. I'm sick of these bleeping fences in France! They must be made of reinforced concrete!

Anyway, I did my duty. My flight was tasked to patrol behind our lines. We came upon a squadron of Sopwith Strutters, and I attacked with my squadmates. I shot down one, but my engine was damaged and my left arm was hit by either friendly fire, or the rear gunner of the Sopwith that I shot down.

No matter. I made a perfectly fine dead stick landing, only to be obliterated by a stupid F^#@%ing fence.

May I rest in peace.

Your dead son,

Willy

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I am no fan of fences either. It's small consolation, but at least you died in a fantastic looking plane...

Thanks, guys. I'm sorry for the sour grapes, but the fences have been a sour spot with me for a long time now. It's all good. I will be sitting on the cloud hoping that nobody joins me. yep

Well Slick, you didn't have to wait long! Escort mission with 2 others in some dreadful weather. I had stayed up all night painting my new DVa and was very proud of it. Lagging behind a bit as my mates had the updated version, I saw them turn hard right and disappear in a cloud. Well I stay with the 2 seaters because I have no idea where they went or what they saw. Flying blind through a cloud real peacefully like trying to stay straight and level when BAM!! One of my own mates had clobbered me from behind. Official report says I was "killed by friendly." BTW, it was not the fence that got you, it was because you lied to your Mother about how many beers you had!

Mudwasp, your a natural born killer. End of story.

It was a great challenge Rick, and thanks again for the skinning tutorial. Whenever I think WOFF can't get any better, it does. I even skipped riding the ponies today so I could paint my new Albatross. Pictures tomorrow even though it is now a pile of plywood and canvas in NML.

Oh, MFair, I'm sorry to have to share my cloud with you so soon. According to my post mission report, I was a victim of friendly fire, too. Sorry, mate. Let's hope that we're very lonely up here for a long time.

Hehe, you're right about the beer. I lied to my mutter something fierce! biggrin

I Almost got the Axe on my 1st day back. Posted to Balloon Defense, our 4 a/c Kette had Spads fall on us.
They came down fast out of the sun. Rat a tat, Rat a tat ,Rat a tat, I only had time to twist and Turn then a split S I fired 1 bust of machine gun fire then they were gone. I counted 9 holes in my Battle Flyer.

MFair, sorry it ended badly for you. I am always *extremely* nervous entering clouds near friend or foe alike, still anxious to see how the Albatros turned out, save it for another career!

Looking good, there, carrick58, stay frosty!
