As you can see from my sig my current system is getting a bit long in the tooth.
I've had a word with the bank and the computer says YES so its upgrade time.

I'm going to re use my current case, PSU and DVD drive but everything else will be new.
I've come up with a preliminary parts list as follows.

Intel Core i7-4790K 4.00GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor
Asus Maximus VII Ranger Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard
Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C10 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMZ16GX3M2A1600C10)
Asus GeForce GTX 780 Direct CU II OC 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Noctua NH-D15 Dual Radiator Quiet CPU Cooler with two NH-A15 Fans
Corsair Force GS 180GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive (CSSD-F180GBGS-BK)
Western Digital Caviar Black 3TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (WD3003FZEX) HDD

So I need opinions on this list, does it look like a good combo, any foreseeable problems ?

I'm especially concerned about the SSD as this will be my first one and memory clearance as I believe this can be a problem with the Noctua heatsinks.
Also is 1600MHz memory a good choice or should I go for higher speed stuff.

HAHAHA i just put together my "new comptuer idea" list last night. We are basically identical.

I'm looking at a cheaper MB ... because i'm not planning on doing any OC.
SSD is a little different. check out the one i'm looking at. seems to be a good one.
...and i was looking at the 780 6gb (in the future if i want to get SLI, vram doesn't stack, so might as well get the bigger of the two, and it's not much more $$$)

Ha, and talking about an upgrade, my current desktop was built in 2008. have a blazing fast Nvidia 260 in it. haha

This is my prospective build:

Processor: i7 4790k $340 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117369

MB: AsRock $144 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157503

Video Card: GTX 780 6gb $550 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487040

RAM: G.Skill 16gb (2x8) DDR3 2400 $190 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231589

PSU: 700W $102 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4H81E87131

Harddrive SSD: Samsung Evo 840 250GB $140 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147248

Harddrive Spinny: WD 1TB 7200rpm $80 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4S81V76233

OS: Windows 8.1 64bit $100

Case: ugh, who cares. $100

Total = $1746

I'm not sure about Corsair SSDs, but I have a Samsung and a Crucial SSD and both have been awesome. I use one for OS and the other for "often-played" games. However, I still use a traditional HDD for storage/movies/pictures/etc.

CPU, board, and RAM choices seem to look good. No idea on the GPU as I'm a ATI user. Like the both of you, I have been thinking of an upgrade and will definitely go this way as well.

Apache600, a good case can be a very good investment. I splurged on a Corsair Carbide 500R case and I expect this case to last me through the next 3 or 4 upgrades. It also has very good airflow and options for liquid cooling should I want to go that way --- so it definitely has room for when the funds open up a bit more smile

Yeah, Corsair SSDs haven't rated particularly high, I'm not sure about those. Crucial and Samsung do well, some OCZs have (not all, check that particular model on Newegg to see reviews), Toshibas are decent IIRC.

If you guys have a Microcenter near you the CPU and MB could save you some money.

The 4790k and Asrock Z97 Extreme come out to 396.48 total w/ NY state sales tax. Not sure what state you are in but tax may be different for you.

I just put together a system and was going to buy from the Egg but MC let me get my stuff that day and pay less.

Take the money you save and put it into a Samsung PRO SSD. Great warrenty on the new 850 PRO series and a better controller from what I hear.

Good luck and have fun w the build!

Thanks guys

I do seem to be hearing as far as the SSD is concerned is to get a Samsung so the only change to my original list atm is a
Samsung 128GB SSD 850 PRO SATA 6Gbps 3D NAND
instead of the Corsair.
128GB should be plenty big enough for the OS, Win7's currently crammed on to an 80GB mechanical drive and it hasn't been an issue
I don't see any mentions if it comes with a bay adapter or not so I'll probably need one of those.

I'l be sticking with my current copy of Win7 for the OS, its a retail copy so there shouldn't be any issues with activating it on a completely new system.

No plans to change the case, the Antec 1200 is an excellent case with great airflow and Id highly recommend it to anyone.

Ah yes, that Antec looks good, and 128MB is plenty for OS. Just remember to relocate My Documents/Photos/etc so that they are on a HDD rather than on the SSD.

I'm starting the process of selecting the components for my new build as well. will post what I'm looking at soon.

Drop HDD size, up SSD size if possible. Or just up SSD size. I would go for 250GB minimum, but strive for 500-512GB. It makes installing stuff much quicker and is very helpful for ArmA 3, DCS World and BF4 when it comes to loading speed.

It lives smile

Only changes from my original list is the Samsung SSD and a 780 Ti instead of the vanilla 780.

So far I'm really happy with it.
No real bench marking yet other than a couple of built in ones on games I'v installed so far.

Thief min 58.5 max 103.4 avg 79.9

Just Cause 2

Hey Mark,
Glad to hear that you got yours built. I'm writing this on my new rig as well. It's pretty much everything i listed on the #2 post, except for a 1000w PSU, and a decent case (per Ice's recommendation ... and yeah, this case is really nice for just $80)

BF4 runs flawless on Ultra. LOVE IT!
The only benchmark i've done is 3DMark 11 Demo (off of Steam) Hard to compare my scores against other peoples scores, because you can't break down who's computers are O.C.ed and who's aren't.

The only thing i had to O.C. was the ram, because it was defaulting it's speed to 1333 ... and it can do 2400. Anyway, if you do that benchmark, lemme know your scores. I think i was mid 13,000 or something.

OK my 3DMark 11 Demo score is 14389

I haven't played with overclocking yet but my MB does it itself out of the box and I'm running at just under 4.4 Ghz
The ram was seen OK so I haven't had to touch that.

The only problem I've had so far was with my Saitek X52 Pro. The drivers wouldn't install, it would just freeze and the PC would neither shut down or boot up with it plugged in.
The fix for that was to disable Intel xHCI mode in the bios and the drivers installed and the stick works OK.
