That's awesome - nothing like putting the truth behind the press release.
The opinions of this poster are largely based on facts and portray a possible version of the actual events. More dumb stuff at http://www.darts-page.comFrom Laser: "The forum is the place where combat (real time) flight simulator fans come to play turn based strategy combat."

To be honest, I'm not sure why it would take 72 hours (other than repaint) to get it combat ready.
Hang some pylons and TER/MERs, hang bombs/missiles, load the gun, and yes you're going to need to hang at the very least a centerline (preferably 2 wing) fuel tank(s). Some ops checks involved after hanging the pylons and TER/MERs and a leak and transfer check of the fuel tanks. I bet this could be done within 12-16 hours (again, other than repaint).

I think they strip some other combat-needed stuff out of the display birds. Not sure if it's for safety or security or what, but I recall reading that somewhere. For one thing, do they even keep the radars in there, or do they just have ballast? The Jedi Master

F-16 takes off in combat without the additional fuel tanks? That's a first... Indeed, I have never ever ever seen an F16 with a combat load not have a centerline or wing tanks.

F-16 was designed from the outset to fly to the combat zone with tanks and jettison them - kept the size and weight right down and high potential of having to fight its way in.

USN Removes some components and adds the smoke generator, fuel pump, and change the stick force, etc etc.

I know I saw it somewhere not long ago, but can't find it now. I saw a post somewhere recently on another military forum where they showed a regular USAF F-16C fly with the Thunderbirds because the Tbird spares were broke...or just to show it could be done.
AFAIK, other than smoke generators, the Tbird F-16Cs only remove weapons pylons to fly "slick". I'll hit up a buddy of mine in the next couple of days at work who used to be ground crew for the Tbirds.

Well, as this instance showed they always had the requirement that they be capable of being readied for combat in a couple of days, so they can't change out TOO much equipment or it would be impossible under realistic (ie non-NASCAR pit crew speed) conditions.

Talked to my buddy at work who worked Thunderbirds in the USAF. He says they take out the gun and ammo drum and put an oil drum with a line to the exhaust for the smoke. That's the only modification other than removing the pylons. So now I can see it taking a little while to get back to combat ready. Removing the oil/smoke system and then reinstalling the gun takes over a day.
