Not really a war. Was a communications guy for a state police detachment on the Texas-Mexican border for a short, three-month stint. Didn't see anything interesting but sand, rocks, and scrub bushes.

For me it would have been one of these:
Lebanon (1982–1984) U.S. troops formed part of a multinational peacekeeping force to help the fragile Lebanese government maintain power.
Grenada (1983) President Reagan invaded the Caribbean nation of Grenada to overthrow its socialist government, which had close ties with Cuba.
as JimK (sorry about your friend) mentioned thankfully a relatively calm period unlike my Dad and Brother
My Father did a few Vietnam tours and retired after 25+yrs in the Army (although he spent another 10+ doing the same thing as a military contractor):
Vietnam War (1961–1973) In 1955, communist North Vietnam invaded non-communist South Vietnam in an attempt to unify the country and impose communist rule. The United States joined the war on the side of South Vietnam in 1961, but withdrew combat troops in 1973. In 1975 North Vietnam succeeded in taking control of South Vietnam.
and my brother is in the Army and has been involved with these:
Gulf War (1991) Iraq invaded Kuwait, and a U.S.-led multinational force came to Kuwait's aid and expelled Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's forces.
Bosnia (1994–1995) During the Bosnian civil war, which began shortly after the country declared independence in 1992, the U.S. launched air strikes on Bosnia to prevent “ethnic cleansing,” primarily by Serbs against Bosnians. The U.S. became a part of NATO's peacekeeping force in the region.
Afghanistan (2001– ) The Taliban government harbored Osama bin Laden and the al-Qaeda terrorist group, responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States. After Afghanistan refused to turn over Bin Laden, the U.S. and UN coalition forces invaded. The Taliban government was ousted and many terrorist camps in Afghanistan were destroyed. U.S. and NATO troops remain in Afghanistan to support its fragile new government.
Iraq War (2003–2010) The U.S. and Great Britain invaded and toppled the government of dictator Saddam Hussein. Troops remain in Iraq to combat the insurgency that formed after Hussein's defeat.
Thank You to all those who served
You left out Panama 89-90 and the dirty little wars in Central America.

I was 20 when 9/11 happened just a couple weeks before my birthday. I was a bomb loader in the 389th FS at Mountain Home AFB. I was deployed with them to Qatar. 9/11 Happened about 6 weeks after my 20th birthday. I'd *just* finished the nuclear power training pipeline and received orders to PCU Ronald Reagan four days earlier. Though we didn't get to the Gulf until the summer of 2006.

I finished my military service in may 2001, we call it 'unlimited temporary leave', as we can be recalled at any time. When 9/11 happened I was kinda sure all hell would've broken loose...
Luckily I was wrong.
During service I had a readiness test for deployment in Bosnia for peacekeeping operations but, again, didn't make it in time.
Was a short timer already and someone thought I'd be best sent home.
But boy were we ready. We were the among the first batch of guys being trained as real professionals and not treated as forced conscripts.
Mortar company, Special mountain troops- Alpini.

Desert Storm. Recipient of a SAW round through the left knee in what had to be the friendliest fire ever. Immediately after being shot I was offered a cigarette and an apology. I used to be in the Army like you, then I took a SAW round through the knee. The Jedi Master Nice. I was in Pensacola for flight training on the day the first Gulf War kicked off. Most of my TBS buddies on the ground side went, but we aviators were all stuck flying orange and white airplanes. Was flying in the cockpit of a 737 on 9/11. Saw the second tower get hit. Deployed with my reserve unit to Qatar for the second Gulf War, but by then was flying light transport and not in much danger.

Desert Storm or Bosnia I guess. I joined the RAF in 1990 when I was 18. Never sent anywhere dangerous though. The closest to the action I got was to spend 3 years on vacation at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. That was a tough assignment .

I was in the Luftwaffe 1988-1989. I was 22 years already though, due to a somewhat unfortunate school career. I guess you can thank me for ending the Cold War.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate...
Actually nothing so exciting, Desert Shield/Storm 90-91.
