Took the MiG-21 up this morning to play the radar tutorial. To be brief about it - this thing is going to be quite difficult to fly on a dynamic battlefield. The radar tutorial uses non-maneuvering targets, so you have all the advantages going for you. There are multiple radar filters and settings, as well as weapons switches that must be enabled or set prior to engagement. Many of us are use to "God mode" type radar displays with TWS and RWS capabilities and the MiG-21 radar is a big step backward in time. Trying to build a picture of what is going on over the battlefield is going to be very challenging. (There is IFF though!) The learning curve for getting the sensors onto aggressively maneuvering targets will be significant.

Still coming to grips with the symbols that are etched on the scope. You don't really have azimuth control I don't think - you sort of steer the airplane toward the target to get it in the center of the scope and then you can slew the TDC up and down the scope to chose a target to lock. It isn't magic though..and you will spend a lot of time trying to get the lock (or at least I did..)

Locked...

I couldn't really see any indication on the HUD as far as steering cues for the radar air-to-air missiles. The heat seekers give a flower shaped circle and tones, but it is all very different than what this Western equipment pilot is used to..

My first missile missed after I broke lock too early... Second missile hit and damaged the drone target..

Short range heat seeker...

How I'll do any of this in a jinking airplane with switches all over the cockpit and someone else trying to shoot me down - I have no idea. It is still fun as heck though. A really cool effect that doesn't translate well over screens is that the radar scope looks like it has a transparent screen on it and the CRT itself is set back further in the scope..giving a cool and realistic 3D depth to the scope display. Really nicely done.

Gaaah! Must have!

Beach, would you be terribly offended if I turned up at your doorstep with a handkerchief soaked in chloroform?

That happens once a week anyway. I can't decide if it's aliens or perverts. Sigh.

I think that radar works well for what it was designed for - and that is bringing down bombers. If you want to go vs fighters, then either use "direct mode" or IR missiles.

True fact: MiG-21 pilots were given an AK-47 and expected to fly alongside enemy fighters, open the canopy, and blast the enemy cockpit at a range of about 50 yds.

Nice with an english pit! Might there by any chance be a Finnish air force livery in the release? I just found two different ones in the latest dcs world but with a swede doing the graphics how could there not be a Finnish version.

Is it just me or did only the choir get the module early.

Preview copies were released to specific people, much like what happens with a lot of other games.

Choir? You have apparently never heard me sing. smile

Here are some shots from an air-to-ground attack using the Kh-66 Grom guided missile. The training modules that come with the MiG-21 are really quite good. I will still have a lot to cover in the "Test Flight" videos but I am already well on my way to understanding the systems. This was actually just a dry run for an "On the Range" tutorial so look for those to start rolling out very soon.

The MiG-21 can carry two Kh-66s, one on each inboard wing station.

At this point, my radar is painting a spot on the ground directly underneath the reticle. The Grom is a beam-rider and will go in the direction the radar is pointing.

I fire the missile when I am happy with the radar lock and ground track.

The missile impacts but the radar lock wandered a bit while the missile was in the air. (Or maybe I didn't have it pointed in the right direction in the first place!) The missile hits a bit long but still damages the trucks.

I come around for one more pass, this time manually flying the reticle to keep it stationary over the target instead of letting the radar lock on the ground.

The missile is right on target!

I wouldn't say the aircraft is overly complicated but the pilot workload is very heavy. A lot of functions that might be handled by one switch or dial in the A-10 take three or four switch throws, often on different panels, in the MiG-21. This Kh-66 release required checking no less than four switches on the right console and five more up front. Even the "pickle button" has a switch guard that you have to open up. This is going to be a lot of fun. smile

Although Beach may be a fine singer, I suspect he got his copy due to his lengthy history of published (in print) aviation simulation articles instead.

All I can do is sit back an wait...
I enjoyed trying out the A-10C and Ka-50. I have flown the P-51D and UH-1H extensively. I have flown the Mi-8 almost as much as the UH-1H. I have plenty of time in the F-15C, MiG-29S, and Su-27. The F-86F and Fw190D9 currently have my full attention. But the only reason I bought any of the DCS modules was to bide my time until the MiG-21bis is released.

I'd like to think that. We feature (and I write about) all kinds of stuff in the magazine. FSX add-ons, X-Plane add-ons, DCS, Strike Fighters, utilities, hardware, etc.. The reason I'm happy I got a preview copy is that I get to explore it in depth and it helps me make a print deadline that is very unforgiving. If I don't get it in in time, I have to go 2 months (the span between our issues) before I can have it in the pages, and by then it really won't be new news. We write several types of articles - Q&As, previews, and reviews. The previews are generally not critical because the software is in beta and it isn't fair to swipe at unfinished stuff. Once it goes final and we do the review though, all is fair in love and war. I routinely ding products for poor documentation or things that don't work right.

As for what I share here - that is just a side benefit of me being a longtime SimHQ member and seriously enthusiastic flight sim fan. I'm genuinely into flight sims because they led me to my real career in aviation by planting the seed 30 some years ago.. If I didn't think the MiG-21 was pretty good, I'd say so (just ask the Take On Helicopter guys..I gave them a good bit of grief a couple years back..)

Not to worry; this is standard Mustang/Acer1961.
I really hope you'll direct all of your constant negativity into destroying targets in the sim Joe.

Nice stuff Beach and Bunyap - the Mig-21 looks scary tricky to learn.
