It has been said a million times, a million ways (hey, that was in a song), but the dev's have created a masterpiece of historical proportions. While flying with MJ1 today, June 7, 1917, we were assigned to scout an area about 15 miles southeast of Messines and Ypres. As we approached our patrol point you could witness a series of amazing artillery barrages occurring on the lines between the two towns. It continued at an amazing rate for the entire 45 minutes we loitered rarely with breaks. It got me wondering and upon arriving back at our aerodrome I departed and did some investigating. Not being a WWI historian you can imagine my surprise and awe when I found the following:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Messines_(1917)

The level of dedication it takes to take the time to recreate a period in this level of detail is astounding. Again, as said over and over again........ to the dev's a hearty thank you!

High over the Front
WOFF always impresses. I have played plenty of sims in my life but OBD is in their own league with this one.

Perhaps I have an over active imagination (plus I have studied WW1 aviation for over 45 years) so I really get into everything that is WOFF. From the activity at your field, trucks on the road, other planes and squadrons flying their own missions, to the look of your formation climbing to the front in the morning sunshine, observers standing ready with their guns - flying a Brisfit career with 48 Squadron. I have way too many favorite planes.
The word "immersive" is often bandied about but richly deserved here.

The one moment that always gets me (perhaps because I spent 8 years in the USMC infantry) is flying in the sunshine and looking down under the clouds to the wet murky trenches at dusk and watching the artillery bursts. That always sums up the WOFF experience for me. You are not the center of the universe and other things are going on around you and you are just part of the great on-going action. Amazing.

I realize it is all bits and bytes but like I said - I have a hell of a imagination!

Shameless plug: With my "WOFF News Mod" installed, you'd have read about the Messines Ridge attack in the WOFF morning paper. Beats Googling the date every time you fly, just saying (grin) winkngrin

My latest discovery, and I have only heard it twice, is the music being played in the distance as if over a loudspeaker after landing and waiting for the rest of my flight to come in. I had to sit and listen for a while, nice tough.

nbryant, some time ago I had noticed the same battle of Messines taking place,
and I had the same feeling: I knew this was something special, not the everyday barrages.
WOFF is rich of historical detail. (I would not be astonished [but surely amazed], if at
the right point of time that huge landmine would blow up, which the British troops had
dug deep into the ridge, and which's explosion could even be heard in London.)
Only WOFF ever brought such things so close for me.

Good thing you did do a shameless plug, I haven't heard of this before. Haven't played WOFF in a while, I will try this mod, sounds great.
