As per the OpRep:
Quote:
Right now on the Development Branch, the advanced flight model (FM) is available for all existing helicopters and, naturally, will be part of all future helicopters In Arma 3, too. We'd like to stress that it's strictly optional functionality and is, by default, disabled.

Can't wait to get home and try this out! This is my most anticipated "sim" of this year, as flying helos in the incredibly beautiful world of A3 looks like a real treat. I'm especially eager to see how the Comanche and "Super Lynx" (forget what they're called in game) are like.

biggrin

BTW: Anyone up for some MP Helo flying?

Awsome news!

DL'ng as I type and really looking forward to try the new FM out. As you say, nothing beats flying NOE in A3, looks incredible!

My initial thoughts after trying out the "beta" of the RotorLib Integration, where in I did some laps of Stratis in all of the Helos:

-This is certainly a massive step forward for Helos in Arma! It's clear they're taking the helicopter physics seriously, and doing what they can within the confines of desktop computing.

-Ground pounders take note, combat insertions should be faster and more fluid/realistic. with the basic FM, you can't drop the collective and flare without ballooning up several hundred feet. Not great to do over a combat zone... The alternative was to slowly drop airspeed, often taking the better part of half a mile out from the landing zone, and requiring an agonizingly slow approach to the drop zone. Also not ideal. With the Advanced flight model however, you can drop the collective and pitch back to let air rush up through the rotors and essentially aero-brake without gaining altitude. Allowing a fast approach and an abrupt approach. A real game changer!

-It's impressive that every helo has it's own flight model, and each exhibit different characteristics. They aren't quite up to the fidelity seen in ToH, and still fall well short of what we've seen in DCS, but I'll forgive this in lieu of the wide selection of helos available.

-As far as growing pains, the flight models do have a few quirks. Namely, they over corrected for the windmilling effect exhibited in the basic flight model. With the basic model, above a certain airspeed you essentially lost all anti-torque (rudder) control. This made attack runs frustratingly difficult, as you couldn't make minor left or right corrections without banking. This appears to be a misguided effort to mimic behavior real helos exhibit, where in forward movement the helo will windmill into the forward direction of flight and require minor anti-torque corrections. ToH did a decent job of modeling this behavior, where at lift off you'd need a considerable amount of anti-torque to correct for the main rotor, but as you transition to forward flight, the windmill effect takes over and you need less and less rudder input.
Now however, it's the opposite issue: There isn't any notable windmilling effect on some helos, like the lynx. As a result, in forward flight, banking right or left sees you side strafing versus initiating a gentle turn. The ToH fight models also required a few rounds of patching to get right, so I suspect we'll see this corrected over time.

So, it's a beta, and thats fine. ToH saw a huge improvement over time (including community efforts to tweak the flight model) so I suspect we'll see it here too.

This sounds cool! I've never really got into flying in Arma because of the arcade flight dynamics; but hopefully this will change my mind and I can explore another area of the game. Unfortunately I've disconnected my HOTAS since I've run out of room on my desk frown

Meat,

Do you have any missions that require us to Air Assault into an Urban Area a la Blackhawk Down or some such?

I've got one that was broken by the last patch that's a little bird intensive assault into Kavala. It'll be fixed for the next patch.

Based on the mini review above by AgressorBlue I can concur 100% about the FM. I really like the way that you can dump forward motion by lifting the nose without gain altitude unlike the base FM they sent out with the game. As I have told our internal airlift group in another community I think we will see pilots struggle just a little bit since they have been working on the original A3 FM and have learned to compensate for it. I think most "pilots" should be able to pick it up within a week or two and should be good to go by the time our missions start coming out.

In case you guys didnt see Dslyexci posted some thoughts he has:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMF4zrPh32w

I for one appreciate where they want to head with the flight model but, the one on the dev branch right now needs work. I agree with most of what Dslyexci is saying and I look forward to seeing what becomes of this feature as its released. My biggest complaint is that the controls just feel sluggish and that more work needs to be done with inputs. The ability to set a curve would be most welcome and the default deadzones make no sense. They make fine adjustments near impossible. Also, if they are hell bent on making every rock and bush in Arma a potential helicopter explosion the 6-dof needs to be improved so we can actually see where we are landing.

I have to agree with Dslyexci - if they go the advanced FM path (which is commendable) they absolutely have to also go the advanced DM as well because right now the DM is pretty much negating any advantage gained from the new FM.

You can set control curves and completely remove the dead zones. It's not quite as robust as DCS though.

I see what your saying on the landing though, but as a "band aid" I just use external view for a quick spot check.

What is the mod that allows a wider range of view from the pilot seat? I saw a thread in here the other day that showed the name and I can't remember it. Anyway I find with my TIR that when I look left I get a shorter distance to the edge when in a side by side helo config. Whereas on my right side I can look way back over my right shoulder into the rear but when trying to lean left and look for landing it jumps back to the center front way too early.

Wasn't that "Head Range Extended" or something like this?

So is this related to the helicopters DLC I've been reading about?

Just gave it a try. I can definitely feel the difference. It fells a lot lighter and less clunky than before. Definitely an improvement.
