No matter how great the special effects seemed at the time the movie came out they always seem cheesily done after several years.

True to a degree but there is very little CGI, especially the early stuff, which I prefer to good model work.

I don't disagree with you on that point. As far as I am concerned most of the CGI stuff looks cheesy when the movie is released. At least the old model work looked believable when I saw the movie.

I don't get it. Why is this an "alternate" version? I didn't see anything different from the way this sequence was in the original film.

The only thing I did notice was the soundtrack. Horner's score was playing during the countdown while in the original version there's no music.
