In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

I know it was standard scheme back then but for me as a swede it feels wrong to see the Catalina in black. And no I didn't exist when they was active in Swedish Air Force. And my interest for WWII has made me used to see them light blue.

But the model looks great. Great work on it.

Are you going to "weather" the decals some. Looks a little bright to me, but it could be my computer. I love the rest of the weathering. very cool.

Looks good thumbsup

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the universe is for it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more inexplicable.
There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

Good catch. The decals were printed "pre-faded." If you look at the red and blue - its definitely a light shade than the normal stars and bars. That being said - I should probably "dirty" them up with some darker chalk to give them some character.

I think a light wash would help tie them in to the surface a bit better- the colors are perfect for the fading, but the white is a bit stark. Is your Cat operating from a lagoon or a coral strip? If the latter, you could do some light tan/sand pastels on the wheels, the underside of the fuselage, and some banding on the prop blades from the coral dust being churned up.

Looks great!

Looks super, far better than anything I could make smile

I agree with weathering the decals, and also, I would imagine the exhaust being a bit 'dirtier'? A bit more brown rather than grey.

I'd get rid of those decals that came with the kit. They don't look right. The blue should be darker. And the red was taken out of the U.S. insignia earlier in the war so that the red would not be mistaken for Japanese markings. Imagine those bright markings on an airplane that you've painted black to hide at night. They would have stood out like neon lights.
Minicraft made some decals that were specifically for the Black Cats, I remember from my modelling days. The blue was very dark and blended in with the black paint to the point that you could barely see it. Than you'd dull the white down and get a very realistic effect. Good job on the model. Nice weathering, too. You didn't overdo it with the brown which is easy to do.

During a certain time period in 1943 the official USAAC star and bar had that red surround.
This only lasted a short time but is not really out of place on this very well done model.
The decal sheet is for Black Cats.

The pre war markings red dot in the star center and the red and white tail markings were removed early on for the reason stated above.

mynameismatt, that Catalina is excellent.

Yeah, he did a good job and it's a favorite airplane of mine. Don't know what it is about the old Cats. They were slow, noisy, cold in the winter and blazing hot in the summer. Yet they have some sort of Charisma. And they did everything. Run supplies, rescue survivors of downed airplanes and sunken ships, dropped agents, bombed targets, performed recon duties, and even dropped torpedoes. And they did it all at around 100 miles an hour, or so! And the Navy was preparing to replace them when the war started because they were already obsolete.
You're right about the red around the national insignia. I remembered that about two seconds after I hit the submit button but said, "The Hell with it. I'm sure someones gonna get me on that." Lol!!
Now I wanna build one.

Dad said one could almost get sick from the reek of gas that could be overpowering.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Just a quick update. I entered the PBY into the local IPMS contest yesterday, and got second place! (1/48 multi engine category)

I'm pretty stoked - I've entered contests before, but have never placed before smile2

Wow turned out really nice! Always loved the curves of this seaplane, shame we have so few flying anymore in life. Nice job on winning!

I've got a bad feeling about this.....
