I'll have to fire it up as I haven't played it since last year but IIRC you can set the weapons that go in the turret(s).

But, I misunderstood - I thought you meant fire at other ships. IIRC, they either don't fire on missiles or they miss a lot. I'll have to double-check that, too.

UPDATE:
Looks like the Point Defense Turret *does* shoot. But it does it silently. And it fires 1 salvo approx every 1 second. And the aim isn't all that good. Totally not what you expect after reading the Encyclopedia description.
This needs a mod to rectify the thing. A PD system has precise characteristics.
This one is a joke, and isn't of help in the Macross Missile Massacres the game is so fond of.

Changing subject...

I just did that bad mission in Act II, the one that has you go from Mwari to Dagda system using an uncharted L-Point or something.

I read on the internet that many Win7 users have a problem with that mission. I had problems too.
The mission itself is easy. The problems start when you want to get back to base: the game will hang or crash! I don't know if it's the GOG version or Win7.

But I know how to avoid the hanging and crashing smile
Play the mission, follow the events, kill the bad guys, do what you're supposed to do.
Basically in this mission you have to protect 4 transports. Assuming they survive, eventually they'll leave the system, and *then* you will be told to do the same (look at your mission objectives).

This is what you must change: leave the system before the transports do. Simple as that. The mission won't fail. All goals will be fullfilled. With the difference that your game won't hang or crash.

But it will lag frown
Don't know why. The lag cyclically gets bad, then better, then disappears, then starts again.
Endure it. Set a course for Lucrecia's Base, go save, then quit. When next you launch I-War2 there won't be lag.

I wish there was an easy way around that back door mission bug that causes a crash. frown

I love this game. I still play it but can't get past that darn mission in Act 2. I even have it setup for proper FOV in widescreen mode.

PD turret is pretty useless. check this out and scroll down near the bottom or search for point defense.

But there is a way, I just told you. You must leave the system _before_ the transports do.
That's all there is to it smile

Alternatively, researching further, I found this trick (discovered by someone else):
- Bring the T-Fighters with you.
- Enter the system.
- Kill the mines.
- Detach the T-Fighters.
- Target any one of the 4 transports you must protect.
- Send the T-Fighters to "Protect My Target".
- And YOU leave the system _immediately_.

Once on the other side you just wait for the mission to auto-complete.
Notice how this too ends with you leaving the system before the transports do wink

Both methods are confirmed to work. But your game will lag in any case.
Just go to Lucrecia's Base, save and quit. The T-Fighters you left behind will automagically be there with you as you enter your base.

Hey thanks a ton fo the link!
Basically the PD turret works best when you have missiles on your 6. Meaning that the high-speed evade is still the preferred solution.

[edit]
It's since about 18:50 of yesterday that I keep dying the stupid way. The first time I got greedy: I killed a Cruiser and tried my luck at another... which was luckier than me.
The other times it's because I tried to raid a megafreighter. BAD. IDEA. Need massive firepower in short time to force them things to drop before 6 missiles clog up your nozzle...

It drops to below one frame a second on my system and it is powerful--3770k @ 4.2 GHz as soon as I jump out of that lagrange point.

And if it misses the missile is going to hit you right on your unshielded backside frown

Hit it with an LDSI missile as soon as you see it come out of the Lagrange point. It will halt right at the exit, and its escorts will ram it which usually results in a destroyed freighter and quite a few mega pods. As a bonus you get to see the MF blow up smile. Oh, and for this little stunt the escorts never figure out what happened so they don't go hostile.

This!
My favourite tactic and it results in spectacular fireworks.

Not a matter of hardware, sadly. The fps vastly improves in a minute or two.
It gets bad -> better -> smooth -> bad again. Cyclically so.

Must be a lovely prank, I'm gonna play it yep
Been forever and a day that I hunt for Gemstones to trade for an 'Autorepair 4'. I bet those MF have some.

This is absolutely my favorite game of all time. It is so cool to see people still playing it. I might have to re-install and play it again!
