Apparently, a Boeing 777 from Malaysian Airlines (again?!) with 295 passengers on board crashed somewhere in Ukraine. The plane was on a flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.
I just hope that it was not shot down.

A Malaysia Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur has crashed in eastern Ukraine, Russian news agency Interfax reported Thursday. Malaysia Airlines confirmed that it lost contact with MH17, and the flight's last known position was over Ukrainian airspace, the airline said on Twitter.
The jet is a Boeing 777, according to Interfax.
The plane reportedly went down near the border between Russia and Ukraine.

Wow. That's horrible.

Still waiting for the ''aviation experts' to chime in.......
In all seriousness, this really blows for the people of Malaysia and their airline still trying to figure out where and what happened to MH370.
FYI, there is a no fly zone over Crimea's airspace for N registered aircraft operated by Americans. Not that this flight applies, but just shows how political and tense the situation is in Ukraine. Some commander with a trigger happy finger jump the gun??
Ukraine and Russia both have SAMs that can reach a cursing passenger jet. Given the direction it was traveling (east to west from Ukrain to Russia), it seems more likely it was the Russians.
The flightaware tracker seems to end it's trace of the flight over western ukraine. But the news is reporting the aircraft was lost over eastern Ukraine. I don't know enough about these flight tracking systems to be able to explain that. Does anyone know they work and why the path might end short of where the plane disappeared?
I don't think the last couple of comments are appropriate in this thread. Please show some respect for the victims. IMO this is not the right place for sarcastic remarks. Thank you.
There's always enough room in PWEC for these kind of "games".

I seriously doubt it was the Americans or NATO. They haven't been shooting airplanes down over ukraine. Russia on the other hand, has.

Allow me to clarify. The FAA issued a no fly restriction for American operators operating N registered aircraft over Crimea. (There are Australian operators with N-registered aircraft to which this rule does not apply.)
The commander I was referring to was meant to be a Russian or Ukranian higher up. Not American or NATO. Anyways, let the experts solve it for us in the next few hours.
