To be honest, that Berlin party is shameful to my eyes.

Are people really so desperate for a source of proud identity that a match won by 11 guys happening to have the same citizenship (but often imported from many other countries) warrant a homecoming like War Heroes?

It's no secret I enjoy Motorsports, but I couldn't see a driver or team, neither a American Football team, being raised to a god-like level as this event did.

It makes perfect sense to me when you consider that showing any kind of pride for the military in Germany is considered taboo. Could you imagine a homecoming like that for German soldiers who returned from Afghanistan? No way.

rolleyes

Yes, no one would go to the Heldenplatz and celebrate in that kind of manner should Austria ever win at something other than downhill skiing.

Face it, every nation celebrates if their national teams win. Look at Spain 2010 and 2012, or Italy in 2006, and and and....

Neidhammel... neaner biggrin

Oh, and just let me quickly disprove your thesis on American Football teams:

http://blogs.seattletimes.com/seahawks/2...victory-parade/

And this is just one team (Seahawks) in one city (Seattle) that won at a national championship. If there were an American Football World Cup, imagine how the Americans would celebrate should they win that.

[of course I would be laughing my arse off should Canada win that hypothetical AFWC biggrin ]

Neither would I "overstress" the pride thing - think of it more of celebrating an outstanding achievement. And it is not that unusual: each year the winning team of the national football league has such a party in its town, the olympic team was welcomed with a harbor party in Hamburg, etc.
Okay, the scale might be by factors higher, but we are talking about the national sport in the country with the highest number of registered organized players.

Last but not least, account at least 50% of the "attendees" not as football fans but party animals cheers

That would happen in any real football loving nation.

Except Austria!

Well the Bergvolk won't ever win the WC so it doesn't matter.

Mr. Messi seems to have forgotten the header of Hwedes hitting the post and Schrrles shot right on the goalie, so with the goal, both teams had 3 100%ers each.

As sad as i was because we loose, i disagree. I think the better team won. Technically german players were in general IMO better that Argentines players. Also they showed a better collective playing and passing and tried more to win the match.
Also i remember two very clear oportunities, the goal and the one on the post at the end of the first half. And also more not so close but also good oportunities, like two strikes from Kroos (one to the goal and one outside), and one from Schurrle, that the goalkeeper saved.

But it is common to players to remember more the goals missed by their team, than those missed by the opposite team.

Philipp Lahm just announced that he will retire from the German national team effective (almost) immediately.

I guess it's best to quit once you've reached the peak of your career. But he's merely 30 years old, which strikes me as a little young to retire, with the European Cup coming up in two years. confused

Well, that'll free him up to commit all his energy to Bayern Munich, which I appreciate very much. smile

At least he could wait until our next match in September!

Don't want to say he's afraid, but... biggrin

I think that match is supposed to be his farewell game.

First thing which came to mind when I saw that was "Sieve", which is oddly appropriate.
