Congratulations, Germany. It was a great game. Both teams played very well. I wish that shot that made it through Neuer wasn't called out on offside, but even if it did, and the score held, we'd end up in penalty kick shoot outs. But I think since nothing gets past Neuer, that shot was somewhat a moral victory kind of blow against Germany. Germany played well, as did Argentina. Both were on their game and working hard. One team had to lose, but it was well deserved. Argentina should be proud for coming so far to the finals to face up to Germany...and hold on through into extra time. It was a feat that even the Germans respected--and their fans. My wife and I watched the game at Hofbrauhaus and the energy was great. I was rooting for Argentina, so I was fearing for my life (haha) but all the fans were very respectful and good sportsmen. Sure there was trash talk, but in the end, there were several times when German fans would come up to me and say, "Good game!" and shake my hand or give me a hug. And likewise--I really loved that sportsmanlike respect. As we watched the award ceremony, and an understandably disappointed Messi came to receive his Golden Ball award, many German fans stood up and clapped for him. It was magical. Here are some pix And yes, we were a house divided! haha! Since she's Polish, she supported Germany since they have Podolski and record-breaking Klose: Hofbrauhaus was across the parking lot from a Brazilian steakhouse...makes me wonder of there were huge fights in the parking lot last week, haha: Our small Argentine group: German fan with faux World Cup after the game ended: v6, boNes

Bones, were you at this Hofbruhaus ? Living in the city with the original one, this replica does strike me a slightly weird. But great idea! Do German tourists go there a lot, or is it mostly Americans with a soft spot for Bavaria in their hearts?

PM, thanks!
Jayhawk, yes that is the one. There was a line out the door to get in before the game. We didn't get a table until after the game, but luckily a friend of ours that works there got us a good table and meal. We are proud to have actually have drinks and dine at the original one in Munich (and to have had a cold one with you, though at a different location!)! But yes, being that you live there, I'm sure this Chicago one is weird to you.
There are German tourists there, but mostly it is Americans with German ancestry. The oompah band that was playing is straight from Germany though. Our friend said that Hofbrauhaus Chicago actually pays them to fly out from Germany, and gives them free room and board. Only thing is they have to play 8 some hours a day everyday for a month.
The owner of this Hofbrauhaus came up to Joanna and I and was amazed. His son was like WTF? Because they, as well as others, were amazed that we could be together being for 2 opposing teams, haha! It really blew people's minds!

So if I recall correctly, Germany totally blew out Portugal and Brazil but then had close victories over the US, France and Argentina and they only managed a tie with Ghana! Interesting.

Don't forget Algerie, which was also a close victory.
Still, it is normal to have very close victorys on a WC. Not even the best teams can play well and win with a clear superiority all the matches. And also the other team make corrections to neutralize your strong points as the competition moves foward. I doubt any champion team during lets say the final six or eight worldcups won ALL his matches during the 90 minutes and by more two goals.

Congrats to the Germans. Those 1 goal games are real nail biters.
BTW, our local German restaurant is very good. It's more like a Bavarian ski lodge than a beer hall though.

Have they found Messi hanging from a lightpole in Argentina yet?

No, in fact they were welcome we applauses and all. Some even call for a renewal of the coach's contract... dunno why, but they do. LOL, actually his shirt is hanging from a light pole:

When you're feeling sad, just remember that somewhere in the world, there's someone pushing a door that says "pull".

Have they found Messi hanging from a lightpole in Argentina yet? That's Brazil you're thinking of.
