I build aircraft seats for a living, most of which go to Boeing. Seeing this makes me wonder what I'd feel like if that much work was WASTED.

LOL! If it were their fault, Boeing, then that would certainly be a true statement. However, I suspect it wasn't their doing on the derailment so they won't be at fault for anything. I do indeed agree that somewhere an insurance agent is crying as well.

They're gonna try to salvage the bodies and fix them up.

I'm sorry, but even knowing how extensive airframe inspections are, I wouldn't want to fly in a plane that had rolled down the side of a mountain before it was completed.

Yeah that sounds like just as much work as just starting over by the time they fix them. I don't know anything about it but like vocatx I think that would make most folks nervous knowing that they're riding in a bird that first fell down a cliff into a river.

Good point. They wouldn't know. However those fuselages passing inspection is another matter.

I'd worry more about the two that are sitting in the water. The one that stayed dry shouldn't be a problem.

Ok I'm gonna go way out on a limb here and go on record stating that while it's still early in the investigation, I'm fairly certain this was not pilot error.

I'll bet Boeing will have a few choice things to say about this in private w railroad owners managers...

Yes Boeing makes great airframes, and its experience w B17's and B-29's likely paved the road for the B-52, B-707 and 747... but this is not WW2 desperate times against NAZI invaders, where all humans onboard are voluteers pledging their lives to the cause. The 737 airframes that fell off, will no doubt be scrapped...the liability in today's legal environment is WAY too high. My guess is each damaged airframe may cost something like 7-12 million USD each. But were one of those airframes to be involved in a future crash where the airframe was a possible suspect, Boeing could be open to lawsuits costing them over a billion dollars.

No, lawyers won't even be consulted, the accountants will simply write them off for scrap. Railway insurance coverage will cover the costs. Most likely they will give Boeing free shipping for 3 years or something, as the railway won't have the cash to pay out.

At least that's my guess anyway!

Not quite a mountain side accident.... back in the day I flew the Saab 340. Had the pleasure of flying N366PX. This aircraft rolled into a ditch at the Memphis Intl Airport. The aircraft was not chalked after parking. The parking brake is hydraulic powered so overnight, pressure eventually bled out and it rolled away.

A new wing spar among other repairs and she was deemed airworthy. Naturally, the aircraft was nicknamed the "ditch b!tch". She always flew a little crooked since...... Apparently, now it's flying for an airline in Honduras.
