Just came back from Switzerland where I was able to use my French language skills in the Lausanne/Geneva area. French was my first language.

French was my first language. Oh really? I had no idea! I thought you were born in 'Murica! The only French I know comes from food and some war films that I have on dvd.

There's an old joke that goes; "What do you call someone who speaks three lanquages? Trilingual." "What do you call someone who speaks two langauges? Bilingual." "What do you call someone who speaks one language? American."
Guilty as charged. I'm an Italian American and I wish that I had learned to speak Italian.

I never felt the need outside of academic curiosity. English has become so standardized it's almost required to know in the civilized world, basically taking the place of Latin.
In Europe there's a very real possibility of talking a walk for 5 miles and being in a completely different country with completely different languages and customs, so being at minimum bilingual is almost expected. Texas itself is bigger than many European countries; it's entirely possible to live there and never have reason to leave for your entire life.
On purely practical terms Chinese or Spanish (or maaaaybe French) would at least be somewhat useful here. For fun it would be nice to know German or some other language but beyond taking a trip over there it'd be largely a poor use of time to learn for the average American.

1- English My German is not adult-level fluent, unless you count me as a learning disabled adult.
The issue is not p*ssy. The issue is monkey.

1) Norwegian 2) English 3) New Norwegian 4) Swedish (I can understand spoken swedish fluently, even if I don't speak it - they understand norwegian to a large degree) 5) Danish (as long as it's spoken with a 'clear' accent)

The second official language of Norway. Basically Norwegian is Danish with local changes. During the national romantic period of the 19th century some people decided to find the "true" norwegian language by collecting lots of the dialects from places that hadn't been exposed much to danish (ie the big towns), and compiling into a new language. It has equal status as proper norwegian. You are taught both in school, one as primary and the other as secondary. Counties and such decides which one is their primary language, and they have to have at least 20% of their publications in the other language. This includes our national broadcasters. They have norwegian as their primary language, and has at least 20% in new norwegian. But basically "new norwegian" is just like a dialect, while "norwegian" is the pure thing

Guilty as charged. I'm an Italian American and I wish that I had learned to speak Italian. And here's the new joke: In a lot of parts of America nowadays if you don't also speak Spanish you are automatically ineligible for about 20% of jobs. Except that it's no joke.
