I've produced a quick map overlaying the in game map with the frontline and the disposition of forces at the start of Operation Uranus on the 18th November 1942. The map is from Wikipedia and has been resized and rotated to match the in game map.

I'm currently rereading Stalingrad by Antony Beevor and was having trouble relating it to the IL-2 BoS map. The map is big, it seems to cover the whole area of the Stalingrad Kessel and also the main Luftwaffe transport base for the air bridge at Tatsinskaya. Tatsinskaya was overrun on the 24th December and the transport were then re-deployed to Novocherkassk which is off the map, 150km to the southwest. If I have time I'll do maps for the rest of the battle, they should be useful for mission builders (when we get a FMB).

Updated version of the map including the frontlines for 12th and 24th December. It's interesting just how small the Kessel is compared to the overall map size. The frontlines were very fluid and not shown on this map is the raid by 24th Tank Corp on Tazinskaya (Tatsinkaya).

That is fantastic, what a great help!

Are all the airfields marked on the map, represented in BoS? It seems there are many more on this map than I have flown over in BoS. I see you have marked 'relevant luftwaffe bases' - are these the ones in BoS? What about the 'relevant' Russian airfields that are in BoS?

For a future version it would be great if you could somehow highlight which ones on both sides are actually represented in the game - same goes for towns etc, in case there are any discrepancies there.

Great job!

H

Thanks Prangster, that's the first time I see the whole in game map.

I wonder how the BoS campaign will be affected by the fact that there will be no Luftwaffe airfields left outside the Stalingrad pocket after the end of December 1942. Historically only a very small number of Bf-109s and Ju-87s was based inside the pocket in December and January.

Wow! Thank you Prangster. I've been banging my head trying to get a visual of the battle field with the BoS map and the order of battle since EA.

Wow, this is awesome! Thanks for creating the overlay, it really helps to understand the tactical situation. Regarding the airfields - the ones along the Don and all the way west towards Oblivskaya are indeed modeled, I've landed on most of them. I guess the other airfields are also there, but I haven't been there yet.

This is awesome, nice work! Here's hoping that the single player is this in-depth.
