I am a diehard Skins fan. This patent ruling is huge. It means that anyone can make and sell Redskin T-Shirt's etc and the team, nor the NFL can do anything about it. So based on that, name change incoming.
A guy at work told me a Skins joke a couple of days ago which is appropriate for this thread...not politically correct though.
==================================
The Washington Redskins are going to change their name to the Washington Tampons because they are only good for a week and have no second string.
I laughed, but since he is a Baltimore Ravens fan I responded with....So which Raven got arrested this week?

I thought the joke was "So which Cowboy got arrested this week?"

So when will the copyrights be cancelled for other teams like,
Atlanta Braves Chicago Blackhawks Florida State Seminoles Kansas City Chiefs
And many others....
FSU has the Seminoles blessing so that's why there's no issue there. They're very tight with the Seminole commmuity

Names of tribes vs. derogatory generalized blanket name. Apples and oranges there.

FSU has the Seminoles blessing so that's why there's no issue there. They're very tight with the Seminole commmuity I think the Blackhawks also have community support, as do the University of Illinois. They were the Fighting Illini, but I am not sure if they have dropped the Fighting from their name. I think the Cleveland Indians may be next up as far as forcing changes. Not so much for the name as the logo.

I don't speak for native Americans, but from what I've read and the interviews I've seen I draw the conclusions, perhaps incorrectly, that they aren't necessarily offended by the names of the sports teams. What does offend them are things like the tomahawk chop, chants and especially fans donning sacred items like headdresses.
I believe this is more of a case of people deciding we will be offended for you.
No, now go away or I shall taunt you a second time!

respect has a lot to do with it being OK with most Native Americans. Our local Boy Scout Order Of the Arrow has won regional and national awards for their performance of songs and dance in authentic regalia. They do many Cherokee songs and have been invited several times to perform for local Cherokee youth. That seems to be the situation with the Seminoles. Red Skins has too much bad feeling attached to be taken respectfully, IMHO.
Have you seen the Arrow? WWW

And many others.... Those manes while signifying Native Americans .. do not have the same connotation as Redkins.. Names of tribes vs. derogatory generalized blanket name. Apples and oranges there. Exactly...
That view os to totally dismiss the Native Americans who are offended by the name.. and they do exist .. regardless to what we may think about the name. These Navajo Code Talkers didn't seem offended. .. but some do ... and that is something that needs to be considered.. Because many black folks use the N word as a term of endearment makes it no less offensive.. Same thing with this..
Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.

In 2004, the National Annenberg Election Survey asked 768 people who identified themselves as Indian whether they found the name Washington Redskins offensive. Almost 90 percent said it did not bother them.
