No, I haven't really given the stock "future" ARMA 3 a chance really..but I was wondering if there is a mod that puts current military hardware into place in Arma 3? If so - I suppose that would break campaigns and SP missions unless they were specifically made for those units?

There are enough mods out there currently that would enable you to get somewhere in the ballpark, but currently there is not a single mod that does it alone. Red Hammer Studios is working on quite a big mod at the moment that will be adding current Russian and US units. Other than that there is not much in the works.

Done properly, mods that keep the original unit/vehicle classnames intact could be used in the campaign without any negative effects.


Problem is as Tyco said, there aren't any mods. The RHS mod is probably the most realistic chance of seeing a satisfying amount of contemporary vehicles and weapons. The downside (if you consider it that) is that the artists over at RHS place an emphasis on quality, so it takes them a while to push anything out. (but it looks fabulous).

Other two prospective options are AiA/CUP and ASM.

AiA & CUP are related initiatives to port over all of the Arma 2/OA/TKoH content to Arma 3 and bring them to the A3 standard. CUP is a related effort intended to improve upon the quality of the ports, and triesto avoid duplication of work by offering a mediator to coordinate between mod makers (E.G. so we don't have 82.5 M1A2 mods).

Problems with this are that the ports (at least last time I checked it out) were pretty rough hack jobs, the actual unit models haven't been properly redone for the Arma 2 skeleton, and none of the Arma 2 vehicles have proper physix (watching an M1A2 flip over lengthwise after goosing the brakes is always a jarring experience). CUP has the problem that it is relying on the cooridnation of community modders, who tend to be passionate that their M1A2 mod is the only true mode and are offended that you would even suggest that they do the Lada instead.

ASM is an effort by a Polish moder that pretty much tries to do the same thing AiA was doing, but seemed to be futher along in the process.

Until recently it seemed the first release would be ASM, however some vague forum drama apparently arose between the ASM guy and some members of the CUP team. The ASM guy has decided to suspend work on it for the forceable future, because nothing says maturity like grabbing your toys and running home while whining it's the other guy's fault.

Thanks for the information guys. Looks like stuff is in the pipeline and I'll just be patient and wait for it. I don't know why I just can't seem to get into the mindset with these future weapons.. My problem, not ARMA's...

I tell ya'...we've come far, far, far, far with PC gaming.. When I think about blowing up dots as infantry on the Commodore 64 Gunship..I just shake my head in wonder..

I was never really anti-future setting, but it has grated on me as time has passed.

Then again the main reason I play arma outside of the SHQ MP group is mucking with the mission editor, so I always just replace the future rifles (MX, Katiba) with M-16s and AKs, and the rest of the equipment is more or less
contemporary, if a little oddly distributed.

you will also note that seam was in fact present on the cap biggrin

Not just your problem. I'm the same way. Thankfully, there's two new up-armored HMMV mods that just came out and also a new M1, all working with physics, so things are definitely improving. Like near_blind, I spend my time in the editor making my own missions with contemporary stuff and I'm still hooked on the game...just like A2 before it and OFP before that.

The funny thing is, the thrill in Commodore F15 Strike Eagle on Commodore or MS Flight Wireframe Simulator on the Compaq gave me the SAME feeling as the modern graphics/FM do now.

But I could never go back to it now.

Ha ha. I must've been 10 years old, but I remember getting goosebumps when that AH-64 rose up onto the screen. 1-button joystick Collective control was the function keys. Sheesh.

Did BIS mention upgrading Arma2 content to Arma3 standards themselves at some point? Am I imagining I read this somewhere?
