Wow.

This looks great, stunning, professional, well acted, great plot. Why couldn't this went to the widescreen instead of JJTrek??

Wow, it was nice to see Tony Todd and Kate Vernon. That trailer does look great and I think most "hardcore" Trek fans would like it.

Why didn't Paramount go this direction? They probably made the assumption that it would not appeal to the overall mainstream audience.

Todd and JG Hertzler as HUMANS? What madness is this?!? Ok, Todd also played Jake Sisko middle-aged, but I always remembered him as Kurn.
At least they got Gary Graham right playing a Vulcan again.

Anyone know who was the actor playing the Klingon? I didn't recognize him.

Very impressive production values. I'm not wild about the JJ Abrams Federation phasers, but overall it looks pretty good.

On a side note, I never knew that Kate Vernon was the daughter of Dean Wormer. wink

I find it both funny and great that three people from BSG are in this.

So the question remains open concerning the distribution method for this movie assuming the producers get enough funding to make it. Maybe Netflix? Straight to DVD release?

Could be a web release, Youtube / Vimeo.

I don't think there's any hope of them charging for it because it's not an official CBS/Paramount production. They can only ask for donations and investors but it must be shown for free or risk the wrath of lawyers.

These independent ST films are always (thus far) funded up front by fan donations, then distributed for free.

As for legal issues, that's an ongoing thing subject to change.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek_fan_productions

Quote:
Legal issues[edit]
The attitude of the Star Trek copyright and trademark holders toward fan works has varied over time. In early 1996, Viacom (which purchased Paramount in 1994) sent cease and desist letters to webmasters of Star Trek fan sites that contained copyrighted film clips, sounds, insignia, or other copyrighted material.[44][45] In the lead-up to the release of Star Trek: First Contact, then-president of Paramount Digital Entertainment David Wertheimer stated that Viacom was targeting sites that were "selling ads, collecting fees, selling illegal merchandise or posting copyrighted materials."[46] Under threat of legal action, many Trekkies shut down.[46]

Jennifer Granick, a San Francisco criminal lawyer who went on to champion cyber rights, felt that the unofficial sites should be covered by the fair use doctrine in U.S. copyright law.[44] In 1998, then-UCLA associate professor Howard Besser claimed the entertainment industry as a whole was, and cited Viacom's actions toward Star Trek site webmasters as an example of, "exploiting concerns over digitization and attempting to reshape the law by strengthening protection for copyrights holders and weakening public rights to access and use material."[47]

Star Trek fan films have, until recently, operated in an informational vacuum, since Paramount has made few official statements regarding their existence. Fan filmmakers have generally kept a low profile, hoping not to draw attention to themselves. However, with the demise of Star Trek: Enterprise in 2005, the fan film community began drawing more attention in the media,[48][49] and even a certain amount of recognition[50] from the entertainment industry.

Star Trek: New Voyages, one fan series, has established an understanding that Paramount must be properly credited as the owner of Star Trek-related intellectual property.[51]

Maybe Disney should buy the entire Star Trek franchise and licensing? biggrin

I wouldn't have discounted it had they not just spent $4bn on another.

I have lost all hope for a re-invention of the ST universe (which IMO is sorely needed).

The staleness of the franchise (tv and movies) is extroadinarily dire and repetitive.

It could be so, so, so much more.
