Hold Your Horses, there's no Netflix CBS talks

Netflix rumored to get exclusive new Star Trek series

Quote:
It has been nearly a decade since new stories in the Star Trek universe have been produced for the small screen, but we might be getting close to a revival of this storied franchise courtesy of Netflix. At Phoenix Comicon, Star Trek author and producer Larry Nemecek has announced that CBS is in talks with Netflix to produce a new series that would air on the streaming service. Set phasers to excited.

According to Nemecek, Netflix approached CBS about hosting a new Trek series, then followed up with a proposal to create and produce the show completely in-house. If this deal goes through, the series would be a Netflix exclusive in the vein of House of Cards or Orange is the New Black. Interestingly, CBS is supposedly being offered a royalty deal that would pay it for each stream of the new series. No word on whether the series would be set in the new Abrams alternate timeline or the original one.

Wow. If this does turn out to be true then it will definitely be a boon for Netflix.

Seeing as how Paramount owns the theatrical rights to Star Trek, I really doubt that the Netflix series will also be set in the JJ Abrams universe. I don't think Netflix and Paramount want to be stepping on each other's toes.

That is also rumored to be the reason JJ left for Star Wars, where Disney now owns every aspect of the franchise and his ideas aren't limited by corporate agreements.

Where did you read that? That contradicts everything that I've read which stated that CBS only owns rights to the Star Trek tv series and any future tv series.

my mistake,

Film belongs to Paramount/Viacom, TV Belongs to CBS,

The Problem Area however is Merchandising, which is also Owned by CBS.

In order to use The Original Series Character names, Paramount had to license them from CBS. Along with other "Original Series" assets.

Then Paramount has the License from CBS to Produce Merchandise (Games, Action Figures, Coffee mugs, whatever).

The Issue now is CBS is still producing Merchandise from ToS with the original ToS Actors and Resemblances, while Paramount is trying to Merchandise the Rebooted Enterprise Crew.

Since the Rebooted Films still involve ToS Characters, CBS wants to approve any plots/storylines of the Films before they agree to license the Characters to Paramount.

JJ Wanted Total Control over the long term story, and CBS wants them to stick to the original story line.

yada yada yada.

Yeah, what a mess. I don't blame JJ for leaving at all if that was indeed the reason for him going to Star Wars.

Does this mean we will get to see the green alien boobs without the leaves covering them?

I wonder if green alien women shave?

We will never see an "R" rated Star Trek due to mostly business reasons.

Now I am reading elsewhere that the article in the OP is a hoax. Will update if I can get any clarity.

I had trouble buying it. ST is far too big a property to be on Netflix without trying it on broadcast TV first.

At least the hoax didn't say something really outlandish like Kevin Spacey playing Kirk. biggrin

They should leave Kirk alone, get Ronald D. Moore to write and produce, and pick up where TNG/DS9 left.

Pretend both Voyager and Nemesis have never happened. All will be well. Patrick Stewart is still young enough to play Admiral Pickard, Michael Dorne with his full makeup will be fine, Riker probably needs to have had a terrible transporter accident. The female cast is probably too old to be convincing, as is Brent Spiner as Data.

I don't think Voyager / Nemesis prevent any story lines anyone would want to develop. Especially Voyager, that series for the most part could have been taking place in an alternate timeline given their isolation from the rest of the Federation.

Yes, Stewart could play Admiral Picard. Dorne still looks quite fit, besides Klingons live a long time. I think I would have Riker having made Admiral between Nemesis and now but he's gotten into some sort of trouble, by doing the right thing even if it violated the prime directive etc., and been demoted back to captain of a starship (ala Kirk in STIV). It would be a bit much for Riker to have all of his old Enterprise crew on a new ship so I think I'd drop Crusher. If his marriage to Troi has survived I'd cast her as ships counselor / captains wife. She looks fine for a lady her age.

As for Data, he died in Nemisis but Spiner could come back as B4. Possibly with the aid of makeup and CGI he could be made to appear as he did in TNG.

As for other cast they could always bring in some of the Voyager crew, 7 of 9 having obvious advantages. wink RD McNeill and Wang would be great too, as would the Doctor. In the Doctors case Robert Picardos aging could be explained as the Doctors continuing exploration of the human condition by programming himself to age.

Most of them have moved on. McNeil and Dawson do lots of directing now, like Burton and Frakes do.
Stewart is 73, I don't think he's going to sign on to a full time series like that again. Only American Dad has he had a regular role in the last decade, but voice work for a 20+ min show that he only may have a few lines in is hardly taxing.

Plus Stewart has that 35 year old wife so I'm sure she is wearing him OUT. wink

Well Stewart would not have to be, nor may it even be desirable that he be, a weekly character in a "Titan" series. Frakes would be "the man" and Stewart could make occasional appearances as Admiral Picard back at HQ. Or use Eisenhower for inspiration and make him President of the Federation smile
